rack and pinion plumbing
I need to hook up my steering rack and hydroboost. I have a late model 2006
GM power steering pump but understand that is to much pressure for the mustang rack. I think hydratech makes a regulator but can't find it. are there other options? I plan to use the teflon core braided racing hose for plumbing. I used this on a hydratech kit for another car and that hose is really easy to work with.

Re: rack and pinion plumbing
yes, and the seals wont hold for long either. I want full assist to my hydroboost, so maybe just some sort of restricter in the pressure line before the rack. plumbing usually goes from pump to hydroboost and then to steering gear

Re: rack and pinion plumbing
I had the same problem but fixed it using the "Mullins Valve Kit" (P/N 899001). This kit is used to reduce the pressure at the outlet of the power steering pump. Its as easy as removing the valve, disassemble it, install as many shims as you need (each shim lowers the output pressure 100psi), reassemble & install the valve. It took me about 20 minutes and the problem is solved permanently, there are no extra hoses to make-up or new components to install (and mount). If you find the steering is still not right just add or remove shims as required.
I preferred this method because it's cheap and doesn't add any extra lines or valves to my PS system. My 2 cents worth.... |

Re: rack and pinion plumbing
The operating range for the Bendix Hydroboost is 1200 - 1500. If you use the Mullins valve at the pump you reduce the pressure to 600 - 800 psi to the unit, greatly reducing the braking power to the point of a regular vacuum booster.

Re: rack and pinion plumbing
so the mullins kit will work on an 01 ls1 pump? seems like a cheaper and easier alternative...

Re: rack and pinion plumbing
I'm not sure about an '01 LS1 but it works great on my 1995 Impala motor.
