Talking Need help with TH400 Oil pan swap!

Ok here goes this may sound silly but I just bought a new Aluminum, Polished, Finned Pan with drain plug and a new filter kit for my TH400! I will be changeing this out myself and I have never done this is there anything I need to know before I go in to it and take it apart? The new pan came with a rubber seal and the new filter came with a cork type seal and a rubber O ring I still don't know where the O ring would go maybe Because it goes inside I will have to wait and see. NOW the question is wich should I use For some reason I don't think I am supose to use both the rubber seal and the Cork one what is best? Should I add suome Silicone around the seal as well thatnks guys for the help!!!!!!

you should use the cork gasket only, and put some silicone on it as well.

Re: Need help with TH400 Oil pan swap!

I would not use the cork. I use the rubber ones whenever I can. If you over tighten the cork its pretty much trash. The rubber one is more forgiving. The o-ring is probably for the filter, not sure as I have not changed a 400. My experience is with 350's

Re: Need help with TH400 Oil pan swap!

Sir, I would suggest using the cork/ composite gasket. I would put a light coating of grease on the pan surface just to hold the gasket in place. I would not use silicone sealer or cement since even the smallest amount inside the casing could damage the transmission. Best of luck.

X2 on the cork gasket works well just watch the torque it doesn't take much to damage the gasket....the o ring goes on the filter tube.

Re: Need help with TH400 Oil pan swap!

Do you have any extra cardboard to lay down? If you don't have a drain plug it can be a mess when you drop the pan. I remove all of the bolts except for 1 side so the pan will tilt and drain to one side.

Re: Need help with TH400 Oil pan swap!

OK take that cork gasket and file it under "G" They are no good. Drop the pan and fluid. Take out all the bolts cept on in the corner. Then loosen the last one and the pan will tilt dropping the messy fluid in you drainer. Cardboard is a good idea it catches the rest of the drips. Let it drip for awhile, it helps. Remove the filter and you will see where the spout goes into the tranny, there is a oring there, sometimes a metal ring seal. Did you get both? or just the o-ring?. Stick your finger in there and pull it out if it doesn't come with the filter. Ring seal needs to be pryed out and new one tapped in with a socket. Wipe both surfaces clean. Use alcohol or brake clean. and then put the pan and new gasket on. Don't over tighten or the gasket will slip out. If there is oil on the surface then it will squish out easier. That's why they have to be clean and dry. Add about 4 quarts and run the engine. Check the level after you ran through all the gears with your foot on the brake. Then recheck. It will be cold so add till its at the bottom of the add mark or below then run/drive the truck till hot then recheck. I went out and bot some nice stainless allen head bolts to finish the pan off nice.

Re: Need help with TH400 Oil pan swap!

I Have A Tranny Shop And Have To Keep 2 Types Of Gaskets. Durapreme (hard Paper) And Cork Because Different Builders Use Different Types. I Like The Durapreme Because They Are Rigid And Don't Squeeze Apart Like The Cork When They Get Oil Soaked Or Torqued Too Tight. They Can Also Be Reused If Need Be. Most Tranny Shops Will Sell You One For About 3 Bucks. The Filter Is Loose On The Bolt So It Can Stay Dow In The Bottom Of The Pan Where The Fluid Is.

Thanks yes I noticed my old Gasket must have been Durapreme because it was like hard paper but it ripped apart when I took it off!
