Bellhousing, NV4500 and NP205
I am having some trouble finding the right information. First I will start off with what I want to accomplish. I need to use an aluminum bellhousing that will hook up to an SM465 fine. I would then like to mount up a 3/4 ton version of a NV4500 out of a newer gm truck. Are the bolt configurations the same on the front of the SM465 and NV4500? I know that they had certain years with different bellhousings and transmission hookups. I would then like to hook up a NP205 transfer case. What am i missing here? I reallly need some feed back on this. As I have helped people convert a 2wd truck to use a NV4500 but never 4x4. What kind of adapters and stuff am I going to incur. And I absolutly need to use the heavy version of this transmission to handle the torque.

www.advanceadapters.com They have an NV4500 swap book and it costs like $8. Too many questiongs and differences on years of trans, t-case, etc. I bought one when I was thinking about that conversion and it was well worth it. I gave it up because I figured it was going to take over 20 years to pay for the conversion. It was way cheaper to just buy more gas That and the SM465 has a better first gear and is MUCH more reliable. At one time I had seen reports that as many as 1 in 25 NV4500 had failures, but that may have been first year or something. It is a nice shifting trans, but the price is terrifying!

You didn't mention what you are using for a power plant, or if you did I missed it. Are you the one doing the 5.9 Cummins? As someone else noted I would contact Advance Adapter. They have this figured out and can really help. From what I know the GM had two different bolt patterns for the bell housing. Neither are the same as the SM465. I used a bellhousing from a 93 Chevy 2wd 1 ton with hydraulic clutch. The hump from the clutch slave is on the right side of the motor, just above the front driveline. I have a 4" lift kit and I have plenty of clearance. Here is a link to a previous thread with some details of what it takes to get the 4500 mated up to the NP205. I know that the bellhousings are different between the SM465 and NV4500. I was just wondering if there was a way that one could adapt one that was used on a SM465 to a NV4500. I have the bellhousing that i need to use in order to mount to the cummins. I am not using the 5.9 liter as it is ttooooo big. I am using a smaller version that basically cuts off two cylinders and rebalnces it. It will put out 600 ft torque +. That should be plenty for my jeep. So you used an advaned adapters tailshaft housing to convert to the NP205? Do you mind me asking what it cost? Thanks. Im just trying to continue to gather all the information i can to make the process go as smooth as possible.

Well thanks for the info. I shouldnt need the shaft for the t/c. So assuming that i had a t/c that came out from behind a t400. I would not need to have any machineing done to the t/c, and there would be no need for the input shaft. Correct? Also you mentioned the fact that you need to adapters. I know that you need the one that replaces the one on the nv4500 tailhousing. And the other one connects the adapted nv4500 and t/c right? Also what would only the adapters cost, estimate? Thanks

Yep, if you can find a NP205 that started life behind a TH400 you can save about $400. The kit to tie the NV4500 to the 205 was $460 + shipping. That also included a few pieces that are specific to my truck that you probably wont need. Talk to Vic at ext#530 when you call Advance. Good guy and I think he helped massage prices where he could.

Is this true for both the NV4500 out of a chevy and dodge? I will be using one out of a dodge v10 most likly. They are the HD version which i will need. The dodges have a 23 spline output and the GM version has a 32. Do they have the correct adapter? Anyone know. I havent been able to get ahold of anyone there
