need ideas for good gas milage

Guys,
I'm driving this rusty 75C10 with in line six and factory Rochester carburator and 3 speed automatic tranny..........getting 16 mpg street/hwy
What's the best idea for good gas milage setup ?
Don't care about the power, just want to have this truck for everyday driving. I will be happy with 20mpg or better.

Would aftermarket carburator make a difference ??
How about getting new motor and tranny and carburator ..........

Step 1: Walk to local Chevrolet dealer

Step 2: Buy new S10

Step 3: Enjoy 25-30 MPG!



lol j/k 16 MPG isn't all that bad I would be happy with that

don't have any problems with step 1 and 3......step 2 is unfortunatelly out of the questions.
....the thing is that I just absolutely LOVE my C10...we were bonded for live........

plus she is 100% paid for

The I-6 would really like the addition. The tailgate is really a gas milage killa.

If you don't have a high gear ration (3.07 or lower numerically) this would be a good time to get them replaced. These are good highway gears but not best for off the line and towing which I bet you won't be doing much with the I-6.

hey, just wanted to pass along that that kinda milage aint that bad for the inline... I have a 74 c10 250-6 and htree on tree 3.73 gears and 30.5 tires and get around 13city/16highway, and ive tried every trick in the book to bring it up... I had a 80 k5 blazer with same gearing 31's and 3sp/creeper and got 19-20 hwy... BUT until yesterday reading through doug roe's rochester carb book, the carbs were different and that could be the prollem... our rochester monojets were great simple carbs buthte dual jets gm put on em in later years were actually better on gas... NOW ive gone through the trouble of blueprinting my carb, a valve job, all new hoses, sandblasted and painted intake/exhaust manifolds, HEI (with all new delco plugs, cap rotor etc), 24 in/Hg vacuum, new exhaust with 2.25" dia pipe, all in the search for htose few precious more miles per gallon... but i cant seem to squeeze any more out of it... BUT my truckl starts when its 15 below, choke works (belive it or not) and I dotn have any hesitations at all.. drives great!!!! so im stuck on 16, and i guess thats where itll have to stay... But here in MN too the put ethanol blends in their gas and change the O2 content in the winter and that hurts milage as well.... hope this helps, and i love my straight six too....

Two words: 700R4, diesel.

A 6.2L diesel mated to an overdrive transmission in your truck would yield you about 22 mpg, on average....assuming you already have 3.08 gears or so.

I kinda agree with buying the S-10 thing, my 2.8L gets 30MPG on the freeway. But if I had a I6 C-10 I wouldn't give it up.

Before you go out and spend some money on the bed cover try this. Remove the tailgate for a gas tank or two. See if you notice the difference in gas milage. If you do then buy the cover. I bought mine because I know it helps after having had a full fiber glass cover on it before. My truck was an '83 with and I-6. For every long trips I always put the tailgate down. The drag on longbeds is more noticable than short beds.
