Replacing rear main seal with motor in truck...
Tried a search with no luck. Rear main seal is starting to leak a bit. What's involved with changing it with the motor in the truck? Will it be possible to change out the oil pump at the same time? I don't have a place to work on it as we just got our driveway repaved; so I'm looking for a place to have it done, but I'd like to have an idea of what's involved.

What size motor do you have, my guess is that you most likely have a two piece rear main seal. You will have to drop the oil pan, which can be a pain when the motor is in the truck, most likely you will have to jack the motor up to get the pan out. You will need a torque wrench to torque the rear main cap back down after replacing the seal. The oil pump will be easy to replace with the pan off.

Yep. Once you drop the oil pan, seal and oil pump are accessable. With rear bearing cap removed, you can carefully rotate remaining rear seal half out. Make sure you you use sealant in right places and installation is reverse of teardown.Use proper torque on bearing cap. Good luck.

On the other hand my wife would probably back over me in my truck while screaming and yelling about how we just had the driveway done. So I understand.

Yep, definatly doable.
I'd suggest getting a 1 piece oil pan gasket for when you put the pan back on. It will save you a lot of time and hassle. |

Re: Replacing rear main seal with motor in truck...
Thanks for all the replies. Nice to be back, been working a lot. 350 with 2 piece rear main seal, started to leak on our brand new concrete driveway. Luckily the driveways sealed and I had some cardboard down, or I'd be a dead man. I'm not going to be doing this myself, just don't have the time or place to work on it, sounds like it's gonna cost an arm and a leg.
