Overhead console in a 72 Cheyenne

Does anyone know if I can buy a overhead console to go in my 72 Cheyenne K20?
Do I need to custom make one?
And while I am taking up your valuable time... is there a off the shelf centre console?

Re: Overhead console in a 72 Cheyenne

i'm looking for the perfect aftermarket overhead radio consol. i don't want to cut my dash, but i REALLY want a nice head unit!

so, they can be found 'off the shelf' for CB radios... and you can fit a normal (DIN) aftermarket stereo in them. so just try searching for CB consols, and you should find what you're looking for pretty easily.

i think i've seen a couple lockable metal ones... which is a pretty good option if you live anywhere that is frequently targeted for stereo theft.

happy hunting

p.s. you owe me $5 for my valuable time. i accept paypal

actually, they make a headliner that has speakers in it, that you can put an aftermarket radio in. LMC sells it. don't recall the price though.

are you looking for something that goes in between bucket seats, or on the bench? IIRC these never came with a center console that sat on the floor in front of the bench.

Re: Overhead console in a 72 Cheyenne

I have a bench but I am converting to buckets - I don't have that many friends.
I am looking at putting in an AVIC Pioneer head unit and mounting the touch screen in the centre of the over head console.
The centre console needs to house switches, my lap top and a few bits and bobs.
I am thinking I will go the custom option.

For $5 I should think the valuable time would come with a console???

Re: Overhead console in a 72 Cheyenne

for $5 the consol you get lives in my imagination. it's intense... there are lit up toggle switches, a flip down screen with backup camera options, it connects to your laptop to monitor your air fuel ratio and all your temperatures... including your body temperature.

look into a overhead consul from a 90's up suburban, i havent seen any installed in one of our trucks in person but ive seen them with flip down screens in them and i know there is a member who has installed one in his truck u can get them at most junk yards, also the center consuls from the same years of suburbans are pretty nice and easy to find

Re: Overhead console in a 72 Cheyenne

Thanx for the feedback.
Do you have any opinion on an overhead console that goes across the cab above the windscreen vs one that goes from front to back down the centre?
I want to put my av screen in it above where the rear view mirror sits and some switches (spot lights, turbot timer etc) and a small storage area for my wallet, phone and ipod etc.

Have you got a pic?
What do you mean by a door?
The ones I have seen just have a lip with a hollow space to put things.

Re: Overhead console in a 72 Cheyenne

I bought one of these about 10 years ago and it's been sitting in my attic. Planned on using it as a base in upholtering the whole cab (except dash). Was going to use the dash's radio opening for A/C vents.
