TH400 or TH375?

So I dropped the pan on my TH400 to find no filter or bolt to hold on a filter...

I then went online and found a few pix of the TH400 internals that don't look like the inside of what is in my truck...

Is this the fabled TH375 I have heard of...

Pic 5 - one off the net that doesn't look like mine at all - the pan isn't even that deep!!!

The filter I bought is for a TH400 and when it is installed (maybe I am doing it wrong) the pan won't go back on...

What do you all think? And what filter should I be using in this thing?

The easy way to tell a TH375 from a TH400 is the TH375 uses a TH350's smaller output shaft. I have been rebuilding transmissions for a few years now, and done a ton of 400's and I have never seen a filter setup like that!
The valve body has the bolt hole in it to hold the filter there. Looks as if you also have the filter extension tube for the oddball filter setup that you have because the normal TH 400 filter tube points toward the center of the trans. a little bit!

Roger that. I think some of them actually have TH375 stamped on the tailshaft too. Mine looked just the same internally as a TH400. I had to send it to the scrapper though, nobody would buy it. Usually went like this "I really was looking for a 400"..."but this is a 400, it's just called a 375 and has a different tailshaft"..."no thanks, I'll keep looking for a 400"...

The way I understand it is that 67 and earlier th400s used that filter set up.

My guess it is a TH 475 used in medium duty buses ( 5500 series) introduced in 1971 as a lower cost alternative to the allison AT 540.

It came out of a 67 LWB Chevy Pickup...not sure if it is original or not.

Numbers on the side of the trans = CT-67-26195

What filter do I need to get?

The First Filter Set Up Is From A Very Early 400. 1964 Thru 1966 I Believe. They Also Use A Different Pan. Different Number Of Dimples On The Pan And They Are Not Interchangeable. 1967 & Up Used The Flat Filters That Loosely Bolt On. The 67 & Up Are Better Units. A 375 Is The Same Internally As A 400 But, With An Output Shaft For The Common 350 Yoke. However, The Extension Housing Bushing In The 375 Is Not The Same As A 350. In Fact The Only Way To Get A Good Fit Is To Install A 350 Bushing & Be Ready For A Lot Of Honing. I Grew Up In A Tranny Shop

I just wanted to replace the filter...

So I need to be looking for one for a TH375 from a mid 60's truck - anybody else have one of these or know where to get the replacement trans filter?

Sorry For Confusing You, The Transmission You Have Is A Very Early 400. It Just Takes A Different Filter Than The Late 400. You Will Have To Ask For A Filter For A 1964 Thru 1966 Year To Get The Correct Filter. It May Be Difficult To Find. Not Many That Old Around.

I hate 'rare and hard to find parts' that usually doesn't end well...

You can get them at about any parts house, you will probably have to order the right kit because they probably won't stock them. The 68 and up 400 are more common than the 67 and earlier ones.

I think the filter kit you want is FT1013A. It is a fram part number.

This looks familiar...did some searching online. I will call up Napa in the morning to see if they can get one. I am curious to hear the price for this thing.

Good find Sweet70Beast - although I am not a big fan of the Fram filters - I will see what my local parts guy can get me. If it comes to it - at least I know they are out there.

OK - found the trans filter locally and the first one was broken (snout was broke at the spot welds - got the last one they had in stock) -

How many quarts will this thing need - I won't be draining the converter...

TH375 came on the later model (my 90 454 SS has one) so as you have found out the trans isn't 375, but if anyone else wondered the 375 is a late 80's ish to early 90's.

My 68 has the origional trans in it and the spid says 400 but it's got a 350 tail so it's a 375 and i know it came that way the truck was all org. when I got it. Bob
