Help Needed - Gas Gauge

First, I hope this is a stupid question that is easily answered.

Background: When I got this 1969 Suburban it had no tank.

I got ahold of a blazer tank and installed it, when I did there was no sign of a wire for the gas gage. I pulled a wire from a pickup and hooked it up to the tank and then just ran the wire along the frame rail. Ofcourse it was too short, so it's just been zip tied there waiting for me to do something with it for awhile.

This week I felt kinda giddy and thought I would go ahead and hook it up. I spliced some wire to it and crawled under the dash to plug it in.

To my surprise there was no male connector in the fuse block. Just an empty hole that said gas gauge. I looked around under the dash for a wire or connector that it might hook up to and found nothing. I even pulled the front part of the fuse block from the firewall to look behind it thinking it might have broken and the wire was back there. Still nothing.

I crawled under the back of the sub looking for any hints of the old wire, still nothing.

Any help to solve my mystery would be appreciated. Is there anywayto go staright to the gauge?

The gas guage wire route through the body on the Burbs along with the taillight wiring. The wiring goes along the inside roof rail under the headliner and down the door post where it connects with the dash harness wiring.

Hopefully if you look up into the driver's side of the dash you can see the wires coming from the rear.

Thanks, any idea what color (tan?) wire it is or what position on the instrument panel connector?

This does makes sense, I did see some part of the wiring harness heading up into the side of the burb under the dash. I just wasn't able to find where it came out in the back.

Tan is correct. I pulled that wire from my parts burb to put in my Jimmy. Needless to say it was a bit to long.

I just installed a new fuel tank sensor wire for my 68. I am doing mine all original, so it (the pig tale harness for the license plate light, and the fuel tank sensor) comes off the tail lite harness on the drivers side, and there is a hole bout the size of a dime on the underside. Run that pig tale harness with the two leads through it.
I looked forever for that original harness, and I found it at www.classicparts.com

Oh, by the way... You need to order two harnesses for this on the burb... From the website I noted above its:
part numbers - 52-817 & 52-818
One is the the two wire lead that plugs into the main rear harness, and the other is the proper fuel tank sensor lead that plugs into the sensor.

Very happy with these parts. they matched perfectectly to my old nasty stuff... Except new and shiny!

Update, I went out and actually found the wire inside that dime sized hole. It has been cut.

Is there any reason I can't just splice onto it? Is there anything special about the wiring harness for the sensor?

There is a pin on the top of the tank for connecting the wire. This is why I stripped the burb wiring to use for my Jimmy. You should be able to find an electrical connector for this though. Go ahead and splice it.

The correct wiring kit costs about 30 bucks, and it will be done right and worry free. Splicing it will work, but being that its outside open to the elements you will have problems later on down the road.
But then I am a perfectionist... Just my two cents.

Thanks all again. I did go ahead and splice it. Gage works. Although I did have to re-ground the tank.
