Moving to Cali - Anything I should know?
I'm going to be moving from Missouri to California this coming summer. Here there is no emissions testing, just safety checks (brakes, lights, etc). What kind of things do they look for in order to pass smog checks? Is it an equipment check or a sniffer or both? I'll be moving to China Lake (non-urban area in Kern county). Thanks for any info.

STRETCH, I HAVE GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS. I LIVED IN CALI FOR TWO YEARS. I TOOK MY 68 CAMARO, CARS 74 AND OLDER ARE EXEMPT FOR EMISSIONS TESTING. GOOD NEWS TAKE YOUR 71. BAD NEWS, YOU'LL HAVE TO GET YOUR 84 TO PASS EMISSIONS TEST, THEN GO DOWN TO GET TAGS. A $300. FEE IS ADDED TO YOUR BILL BECAUSE YOUR CAR WAS NOT BOUGHT NEW IN CALIFORNIA. PLEASE CALL AND CONFIRM THIS, BEFORE YOU MAKE THE CALL TO SELL THE 84 BEFORE YOU LEAVE OR TAKE IT. i think they did away with the $300 out of state fee. and there are no safety inspections.

Your vehicle will only have to pass the federal smog test that it was built to meet, not the CA test, which is more strict.

Sure do hate to pass a smog test. If I took my truck to Cali, the inspector would just take one look under the hood and say "No way Jose. Bum deal on the smog test but I guess we can still be "foot stompers" and help the environment.

So I guess if the EGR, catalytic, and A.I.R. systems are in and working, as well as the carb being tuned, I should be OK, huh?
