71 Cab Over Fire Truck Questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I found a good deal on a 71 cab over firetruck with a 427 in it (14000 miles on the engine). I was wondering....that engine will fit my truck but what about the tranny? (Its a 5 speed)

Also wondering if the spindles would fit my 70 1/2 ton or could I swap ouyt the axles completely.

And last but not least, would the seats out of the firetruck fit in my pick up?

Hope someone has some answers for me on this one and if anyone knows of any other useable parts they could tell me about it would be great.

you wouldn't want that tranny... it's geared for a lotta work.
The engine however, will pretty much bolt in (might have oil pan issues being a cab over) however... again, this iss a tall deck low RPM low performance engine. Don't expect much out of it.
Suspention is pretty much just scrap weight.
Do you have any photos? We can tell you about the seat and stuff after seeing pics... these aren't all that common so most of us know little to nothing about them.

we need pics! this may be more valuable to restore and run, not to be cut up, too bad your so far up north, I would love to have one of those in my back yard to work on!

Here is a picture of the GMC 6500 tilt-cab dump truck I have with a 427 and a 5 speed with a 2 speed rear-end. It has air brakes. It is roadworthy, but my plans are to slowly restore it. The GVW for it is right at 32,000 lbs.

I picked up a book for it off E-bay.

Like said before the transmission is a heavy duty son of a gun that would be not so good in a pickup. The 427 would work ok but is a slow revving high torque engine. The engine would be great in something like a 1 ton.

I have got quite a bit of info for it off another web-site called "Stovebolts" under the "Big Bolt" section. The "Big Bolt" section is not as active as this board.

Hey now, don't go parting out an old firetruck like that! Preserve it for history's sake... Sorry, I'm a firefighter so I have a soft spot lol...
