Wood Bed?

On my to do list is to install a wood bed in my 76 SWB. Since GM did not make them from the factory, it seems nobody sells a kit to install one. I want it to look factory as possible. What all will be needed? I figured I would buy a wood bed kit for a 73-87 long bed, and trim the pieces to fit. I know of the lip along the side, and the cross bars, but is there anything else? Anybody have any pictures of these so I know what to grab? thanks, DOOCE

Sorry I didn't know they made a wood bed in a 73-87. Mines all metal.

The truck Todd Emmons built used Bruce Horkey's Show Deck:

You might want to talk to Mar-K though as they are a site supporter. I don't know if they offere Fleetside wood kits though.

Re: Wood Bed?

Wood beds were an option on all the LWB trucks (as pictured) they were not an option on SWB trucks.

Re: Wood Bed?

There are pieces you need the go around the wheel wells. They are 3" or so wide and follow it all the way around to cover up crappy factory gaps. The showdeck above is not exactly like factory (and I think that one is made to lay on top of metal).

My uncle has a 77 LWB that has its factory wood bed.

Re: Wood Bed?

Yes, the pick I posted with the red truck is a show deck, it goes OVER the steel.

On short fleetside trucks, steppers had wood floors. I know you know Chris, but others may not.

To sum it up, the only bed that ws not offered in wood is the short fleetside models...and I believe the wood option was teminated all together in fleetsides in 81, perhaps the late 70's.

Re: Wood Bed?

Does anyone have a pic of a bed with the floor rotted out so I can see the pieces I need to be looking for? Does the piece that goes around the wheel wells not go around the entire box? Thanks again
