1972 axle swap

Ok so I was at the local pick and pull junkyard today and they have 2 1972 trucks in there both with the rear axles in em. Can I just grab the axle shafts from one and swap them into mine or do I need to grab the whole thing complete.

the 72 axle will be wider and different spline, so yes you need the whole thing

Re: 1972 axle swap

...grab ALL of it!! front suspention too!! and the rear end will bolt right in all you will have to do is trim 1-1/2" out of the lip of the wheel opening if you have a fleetside..concider yourself lucky most everything that year at most yards is GONE!!! so grab what you can... you won't be sorry!

Re: 1972 axle swap

we bought both rear axles for $75 a pc. Whats better/different about using the 72 front end parts over the 73-87?

I don't think it's any better but it would be nice to get all your parts off 1 truck.

The '71 & '72 ball joints are more expensive and the a-arm shafts have steel bushings like the earlies models. The '73-'87's C10's have rubber bushings on the a-arm shafts, and can be upgraded to urethane bushings if you want.

Other than that they're pretty much the same.
