Motor Stands 6 Cly vs. 8 Cly should I use 6 Cly mounts with My 8 Cly ?

Just wondering for better weight transfer ?
Would there be any problems with getting out the Dist HEI style? hitting the fire wall?

I have mine on 6/250 stands......it sets it back 3 1/2" (+ or- 1/8"). The HEI does fit, but is pretty snug. It will go in/out of the eng with the cap & rotor off the dist. crazyL

Do you think I should consider using 6 CYL stands?

I like the eng setback, & have done 3 trucks that way. the only downside i can see is that the dist fits a little snug. There are a few upsides, other than the weight transfer........I can drop the oilpan with my eng mounts bolted in place! the drive line is akso a little shorter....1 pc shaft maybe? I also feel that they drive/handle better in the rain/slick with some weight moved back. Its all a matter of personal preferance, & you will no doubt hear many different veiws. good luck.....crazyL

I need a shaft built so that no a worry Iam also thinking Wheelies ! I know it involves a bit more than moving the motor back a few inches. Later

mine is set up with the 6cyl stands and the hei is real close to the fire wall and the bell housing bolst are a pain to get out but other than that i dont seem to notice much a diffrence. makes getting the headers in and out a whole lot easier too as well as the oil pan.

I think I am going to track down a pair of 6 CLY mounts and use them.

I put mine on 6 mounts but drilled new holes 1" ahead for a bit more hei clearance. Worked for me! I've heard some people say 8 mounts are lower though, any one tried moving these back? I've never really seen these though, don't know what can be done.

I havent really seen a measureable difference in the height of the smallblock on v8 stands vs I 6 stands.....if anything, I believe it sits a little lower on the 6 stands(approx 1/4").......the later style waterpump (73 up), does however have a greater distance from crank center line to pump shaft centerline , as compaired to the old style pump(approx 1/2").....so if you use the late style pump on a sb in 6 position swap, you may notice that the fanblade is a little closer to the top of the shroud than a factory sb would be......crazyL

i used v-8 mounts in the I-6 holes, had to drill new bottom holes, i tried to put it on the 6 mounts but the valve covers wouldn't clear the firewall with tall aluminum covers, it also makes linkage a problem if keeping a stick. Dev.

I used the v-8 mounts and moved the engine forward, gives you better HEI clearance and lets you use a small core rad.
