Need Help in Dallas Area

I've been hunting for the right Suburban for over 2 years now( since I wrote off my 1990 - Burb versus Train ) and think I may have found it. I'm in Western Canada and its in Dallas. I would be willing to pay for someones time if they would go and check it out for me. I've talked to the owner and he suggested takin it too a GM dealer to get it checked out but I do not want to do it that way. I told him I would get someone else to check it oiut and he is okay with that. I need it driven to make sure there are no howls from the rear end and the transfer case works and shifts as it should, and the A/C blows cold and anything else you wanna check out. I'd be flying in and driving her home 1800 miles and would like to make it without breaking down.

Please PM with your phone number and a good time to call if you can help.

Thanks

The crash was in April 2006 and other than a seat belt welt I walked away as the train was only going 25 MPH. I had looked for a year to find a Burb like that one cause it only had 85,000 miles on it and I'd only owned it for a month at the time of the accident.

I work for the RR and it's never pretty when something like that happens. I'm curious as to how that happens as well. At 25mph it was going slow enough for you to notice it from quite a distance and get out of the way.

I'll try to explain what happened but the bottom line is , it was totally my fault , I really screwed up big time and I guess the big guy in the sky didn't have room for me yet, so here I am unscathed, except for the bruising.

I was heading East along a street and wanted to turn south at an intersection through a right hand cutthrough. Just as I was reaching the cutthrough the signals went off and the gate came down and glancing over my right shoulder I could see the train coming from the southwest into a sweeping turn heading east. I should have waited for the train to pass as I was on my way to work at 6:05 AM and didnt start work untill 7:00 and was
5 minutes away. I decided to go the 50 or so feet and make the 90 degree right hand turn at the actual intersection and beat the train cause there were no barricades at that spot cause the traffic light held the traffic at the other side of the intersection. Well you know the rest of the story ,my timing and judgement were off and I got T-boned.. As I started to cross the tracks I realized I am not going to make it and said out loud " Aw f*** I'm gonna die" and as I got the last word out of my mouth I got hit. I was pushed 3 or 400 feet down the tracks till the train could stop. If I wouldn't have been in a Burb I doubt if I'd be writing this, this morning.

Like I said , I screwed up and lived to tell the tale. If anyone ever doubts that seat belts work tell them to get a hold of me.

Holy crap man, that sucks. Glad you are ok though. I'm the DFW area, and may be able to go look at it. Do you know where in Dallas it is at?

Re: Need Help in Dallas Area

Interesting story. we all make mistakes, some of them fatal. I'm glad you lived to tell the tale. Your experience and survival make the story more impactful for those that would otherwise not listen.
On a side note I almost got creamed 1 week ago with my family at a train crossing. But I don't know who's fault it really was. I will accept partial responsibility for not double checking, but there were other malfunctions going on also.
I was at a train crossing with arms and lights. There was a signal light on the other side of the tracks. When the train passed and the arms went up I noticed for the first time that the signal light flashes red when the train is passing. Hmm that's interesting. Well the signal turned green and I proceeded to leisurely cross the tracks (without looking both ways, my fault) and just happened to glance to the right as I was crossing only to see a train utility truck hauling a$$ towards me. The arms are up, no flashing lights, and the signal light is green, and I'm crossing mind you. Needless to say I mashed the gas and if it had been anything less than the TBSS with the LS2 we probably wouldn't have got out of the way in time. I looked in the rearview mirror and he passed not even 1 second after my back bumper cleared the track. After he passed the arms went down again. If he would have hit us I am sad to say that I would have probably lost my family (wife and daughter). Since he would have T-Boned the right hand passenger side right in the middle. I have made it my new mission to always look both ways when crossing a RR track from now on, even if the arms are up.
Hopefully others will read this and do the same!
Shawn
