4 x 4 to 2 x 4

My wife is considering buying a 92-2002 Suburban but asked me if there is any difference in the 2 wheel versus the 4 wheel drive. I am thinking you can still buy a conversion kit to make it 2 x 4 instead of 4 x 4. Is this years 4 x 4 full time or selectable? I had a 77 Jimmy before that I changed to 2 x 4 instead of full time and it worked pretty good.

You might ask why then consider buying a 4 x 4. They are dirt cheap now the gas has gone up and the wifes 87 is without AC.

One more question what year did they change to the new freon? This is one reason we are not trying to fix the 87's AC to darn expensive.

Re: 4 x 4 to 2 x 4

92- 2002 subs came both ways. the 92-around 95 were selectable and then they started adding the auto track, whitch is still selectabe but some modles after 99 or 200 came with a full time case. they are not like the old 70s t- cases where they offer a convertion kit. the only way would be to swap the t- case. If you want a selectabe one the best thing to do is see if it has a 2-hi button in the truck when you are looking at it, if it dosent, I would pass on it and find one that des. If you have not bought it yet you may as well find the one you want. i would recomend the 99- 2002 since it has the 5.3L, the get wat better MPG than the 98 and older 350.

Re: 4 x 4 to 2 x 4

Are you wanting to eliminate all the 4wd components or are you asking if these 4wds part-time?This later design 4wd is as roadworthy as a 2wd.They ride like a 2wd,too.There is virtually no wear on any 4wd parts when not in use.You do need to spin a transfer case in your driveline, but I don`t believe there is any significant difference in drivability or fuel consumption. That`s why about all you see are 4wds,at least in this part of the country.(I`ve noticed there are alot more 2wds in TX)
