GM Rallye Wheel Question and pic request

Hey,

Looking to spruce up my wheels, have been running the 4WD rallyes for quite a bit. Since I used to have no money and kind of relied on used tires for my rig, the beauty trim rings have done a number on the painted surface of the wheels. See the first link for a pic of this type of wheel.

http://www.stocktonwheel.com/light_truck_wheels.htm

The wheels I have are 6 lugs and are the 4th picture down.

I am looking to take these wheels down to bare metal and either powdercoating or painting them a darker metallic shade of gunmetal grey. Either I am really stupid or just a glutton for punishment, but I put in a drop kit and kicked down the extra $100 for Early Classic to run the 6 lug front discs. Seems like the aftermarket is pretty much tailored for the 5 lug wheels and I am up a creek. I really like the fat whitewall look, but am not really into the full blown rat rod type flat black paintjob. What I want to do is keep things simple and run some sort of "spider cap" over the 6 lugnuts. In my opinion less is more, especially with wheels...

Here is an example of a spider cap.
http://www.hubcapmike.com/spider-c8056.html

Does anyone know of someone who makes these for us 6 lug folks, or am I still up that creek?

I was hoping to not have to do the poor man's spider caps with the bullet and the specially tipped lugs, but is that the only option I have open to me?

PS--Anyone have any photos of a truck rallye with an other than stock color? Would like to see what it would look like in a color other than light silver.

Thanks.

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience, well......that comes from bad judgment.

When I had my 6 bolt rallies on my truck, I looked & looked for aftermarket caps & found only stock replacments. You will probably have to make some. I ended up running rings & no caps until I put my slots on...Good luck with the search & if you find something, let me know...

Not the type of vehicle or style you are after, but when my Blazer was new I had another set of rallyes powdercoated gloss black and stripped the silver paint off the flange of the center cap. There`s great chrome under there.I like the idea of gunmetal grey on these wheels. The thing with rallyes is they are GM wheels designed to accept GM centers,no aftermarket picked up on making an alternative.

Re: GM Rallye Wheel Question and pic request

I too really liked this look when I had rallies on my 68. There's 2 ways to install these. Go to a local tire dealer somewhere in your area. They should have these hubcaps in stock or could possibly tell you where to find them. You can also find them at swap meets. A tire retailer should have the original style lugnuts that the plastic lug cover thread onto and hold the cap on.

Another way is what I have done. These caps have tabs on the backside of them between the lug holes. They line up perfect with the center cap mounting holes in the wheels. The tabs have small caps in the ends of them. Take the tabs out of them. Go to a hardware store and get some 1/4"x20x1"
self threading screws. Line up the tabs with the mounting holes and put the screws into the tabs from the back side. Try not to overtighten them, the plastic can strip out pretty easy. You can still tighten them enough to hold them on. Then just use regular chrome lug nuts to hold the wheel on.

This is the only pic I have right now. I have some better, more detailed pictures that I will post later if needed. I know these are 5-lug, but the process is the same. I have a piture of a 6-lug whell done this way, but will have to find it.

I would like to go with a "Dog Dish" center cap on my Rallies. It seems like it would be worth someones time to build a spring loaded ring that would bolt to the original holes for the centers. It could then hold any type small cap you chose.

Re: GM Rallye Wheel Question and pic request

Longhorn Man, that is some nice work in your thread, those wheels look clean!!! What I want to do is make my wheels look a little different without making them standout as too dark of a color.

This is is the look I am going for.
http://www.hubcapmike.com/spider-hubcaps-photos.html

But since no one does this for us 6 lug guys, could I go with a something like this with some dome top long lugnuts to at least get close to the look of a spider cap? Anyone ever use a push through type with any luck?

Scroll down and look under misc.
