Inline 6 question...again

Hey everyone! I don't venture here too much, but I have a quick question that I'm sure has been asked and answered many times. First, I own a '63 Chevy with a 230 inline 6 and standard 3 speed on the column. I've always wanted a 292 and found one for pretty cheap that has been rebuilt. The owner says his '65 Chevy truck originally had a 230 with the same tranny I've got in mine. He stated that he hot rodded the engine too much and it died the following year. He took his truck to the dealership and had them install a 292 in '66. Will that engine really bolt right in? Bell housing, starter and motor mounts? If not, what would need to be done and how time consuming would it be? Thanks!

Re: Inline 6 question...again

The only thing that needs changed is the right(passenger side) motor mount. On the 292 the right side motor mount is placed where the fuel pump is on your 230. All the six cylinders have the same bellhousing pattern as a small block chevy, so that will all work. The starter should work too. Shouldn't be hard at all.

Re: Inline 6 question...again

I believe there is a little more involved with a SBC swap, but I've never done one so I'll let someone else chime in.

Yep.
As mentioned, going to 292 from 230 will require passenger side engine mount change. But all the rest is ready to go. ALL the rest, bell housing, throttle linkage, exhaust, etc.

Going to SBC (283/327/350/etc) will use same engine mounts as 230 and 250, same bell housing pattern, etc. The one sticky spot is connecting the throttle linkage, the 230/250 link won't (likely) work (mine didn't), but (for me, with Holley 600) it was just a matter of bending up a new connecting link from 1/4" rod. And then you've got the exhaust to deal with.

My 350 came without a starter, I used the one from my 230 and it has worked fine nearly two years now. This starter bolts to the bell housing instead of the engine block like "normal" SBC starters, so allegedly not the correct starter, but still it works.

May god bless those GM engineers that manifested such interchangability, and their most likely stingy managers that made them reuse stuff instead of reinventing.

Re: Inline 6 question...again

when i plant this 292 in my truck, will i have to drill holes for the new motor mount location, or are there holes already there for me to bolt it to?

Re: Inline 6 question...again

My '69 has a 292 and has both sets of holes drilled in the frame. But I can't remember if my '64 has both sets of holes. If it has the holes, on the top of the framerail you will see one hole a few inches in front of your current mount. I believe they use forward hole on the 230/250/SBC location as the rear hole on the 292 location. If it has one extra hole, you should be good to go. Otherwise you just have to drill it, no big deal.

Yep, all that interchangeability makes everything so easy!

Smile Re: Inline 6 question...again

ok...the single arrow is where i assume the new motor mount with bolt to the frame. on the crossmember, there are 2 other holes...both are closer to the frame than the hole where the motor mount attaches to the crossmember. is there another motor mount support or whatever that thing is that attaches to the frame and crossmember!?

Re: Inline 6 question...again

Yes, I'm pretty sure the 292 passenger side tower is shaped slightly differently than the 230/250/SBC mount. I believe you can't just move the one you have forward.

Re: Inline 6 question...again

are they the same as 67-72? I may have a pair. They will be CHEAP cause they were welded to the frame, but can be cleaned up nicely.

Re: Inline 6 question...again

This is all assuming that you want to put a V8 in it.

For 60-66, the motor perches use the rearward two holes in the frame rail. Your picture looks like the correct perch for a v8 or i6.

67-72 perches use the front two holes. This moves everything forward for more firewall clearance for the dist. But if your truck is a 60-66, you will have alignment issues with the tranny and the linkages as they will have to move forward.

You want standard I6 mounts for a 60-66. They will mount just like your picture shows. I can post pictures of mine on my '66 GMC if you want.

Re: Inline 6 question...again

i'm putting a 292 in it. the motor mount location on the passenger side is where my fuel pump is on my 230. it looks as if i can move the perch forward and still bolt to the frame, but where it bolts to the crossmember, it doesnt look like it will bolt. is there a different perch for the 292 on the passenger side?
