Low Buck Paint Questions

I've decided to literally tear my 65 C10 a part and more or less start replacing the things that need replaced. Now I'm not swimming in cash like I'm sure most of us here are not. If I take a part off say a suspension part off is there a particular paint I should spray it with or can I just brake out a can of Rustoleum flat black and give it a few coats?

My goal is to rid of all surface rust and give the undercarriage a single color opposed to the color of black here, surface rust there mixed with whatever else is living under it. Im not building a show rig, but I'd like to keep the rust away.

I figured I could:
Remove part
Grind off all paint and rust with wire wheel
Degrease
Prime
Spray with spray paint or something of the like.

Oil based, Acrylic, Enamel or any other fancy types of paint needed?
I thought about using some Por-15 on the frame, but its all up in the air.

Im also assuming engine paint would have to be high temp paint since its different.

Am I nuts or am I on the right track?

I would put a coat of POR-15 on everything I wanted to paint, but the engine. Then a coat of Rustoleum, or some enamel would be fine, as PRO-15 can't handle UV rays.

If you paint then everything is in the prep work. I did por 15 on my jeep and it has lasted for a couple years with-out peeling ro flaking - and I didn't put more than 30 hours into the work. I suggest that you buy metal etch though, it seems to make the por15 stick better

I used Tremclad (Rustoleum) flat black on everything under my 72 C10, and rubberized undercoat on all the underside sheetmetal. Where the sun never hits any of that, it lasts really well. For something I was driving, I didn't want to spend huge coin.

Thats what I was thinking. I thought I'd Por-15 the frame and everything else was going to get shot with Rustoluem flat black.

Isn't that rubber coating stuff available in a spray can if needed?

I've only been using spray paint, but I know I need to get the spray gun out because its going to get spendy.

Actually I should look into rolling the Rustoleum because Im sure there is alot wasted on spraying.

I'll have to pick up some and give it a test run.

muddpile, thanks for having that build of your 1972 it gave me an idea or two. Did you use a roller or a foam pad for applying your paint? As well did you have to use a special primer?

Hot Rod rolled Rustoleum onto a Falcon and made it come out pretty nice. It's a lot of work, but it is cheap.

I used to be a big fan of POR-15. After painting the rims for my 52 and following their instructions the paint has failed over the last 10 years.

Someone here got me turned on to rust bullet. Application is easier, it brushes on to a decent finish.

I mostly rolled my frame and suspension, then brushed and sprayed what A roller couldn't get to. The primer is Tremclad (Rustoleum) regular grey primer. I just used rattle can rubberized undercoating on the underside sheet metal.

I used this stuff on my frame, axles, leafs and other little parts. www.nomorerust.com the ag111 stuff is UV safe but the chassis can isn't (that's what I used with the rust sealer). I put it on with a foam brush and only used 1.5 quarts for two coats. One coat would have worked and this stuff is hard like powdercoat.... $63 for the kit.
