Need Help with identifing HD Trans/TC - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a Chevy transmission and transfer case combo given to me quite awhile back that I would like to identify. Transfer case is a heavy cast iron unit with G-99404 cast into the body. It has a steel removable plate below the rear output shaft and has the date code of 6-25-79 cast into it. The transmission bolted to the transfer case is also cast iron and has a removable coverplate on the lower right hand side.
Does anyone have any idea what series of chevy truck this came from and what use/interchange it might have? Any value?

On the t-case is there 2 rods coming out the front towards the trans?

if so then it is a 205 t-case a good strong unit, if not then it should have a box with a hole in it and levers coming out of the box for the shift selector, if it has that then its a 203 basically a boat anchor as they are not really any good.

the tranny is more then likly a SM465 this should be written on teh drivers side of it right in the middle. its just a regular chev 4spd trans. pretty near indestructable.

all depends what is in your 82 now. but you will probably have to modify the d-shaft lengths.

that is a NP205 model tcase. very heavy but very strong.

Yea, the t-case by itself weighs a ton. In my 82 truck I have the 117mm 4spd with granny and the NP Transfer case that came with the trucks with no hubs. For a daily driver it's OK. I screwed up about a month ago and "gave away" a t-case that came out of an 81 blazer with an automatic that I had stripped down thinking that it wouldn't swap with my manual transmission. This would have been a direct backup for what I have.

So does this appear to be an NP-205??? No casting # like the one pictured above, but it looks the same.

Yep, that's a NP205 Slick. From what I've learned, the tell tale sign of a 205 is the small idler shaft cover with 3 bolts on the back center of the t-case. I understand that only the 205's have this.

The one I have has a 10 spline input shaft. It has the square plate 4 bolt front output and the cast Aluminum rear output for a slip yoke driveshaft. It was bolted to a 465 4spd. manual transmission. Hopefully here's a picture of it.

Those "boat anchor" manual tranny versioned 203s are highly sought after by members of ColoradoK5.com. If you have one, do not throw it away, but instead, advertise it for sale there. They use them for doubler conversions, which basically uses the 203's range box only and mates it to a 205 transfer case.

That definitely looks like a 205, I've just never seen one with that long output housing. It may be common, I've just never seen one. If your interested in getting rid of that shifter knob, let me know.

That 205 version with the long slip yoke output is a 1980 version...ALL GM trucks in 1980 used the 205.

Like NAPCO Ken said, the 203 is worth holding on to for the doubler that is popular with the CK-5 bunch. Plus, if it's one that was bolted to a 465 manual transmission, it is rare.

A "doubler", made by ORD (Off Road Design) of Colorado, uses an adapter to mate the range box section of a 203 transfer case in between a 465 trans and 205 transfer case, or in between a TH400 & 205, or TH350 & 205, etc. They have quite a few kits available. The nice thing is you get a two low range ratios, 2:1 and 4:1 thru the range box of the 203. They're pretty cool and bulletproof. Check out: www.offroaddesign.com
