1972 GMC Ultimate Tow Rig
I bought my old company truck 2002HD Extended Cab Long Bed 2wd. My wife connected it to her horse trailer and put a padlock on it so that left me without a tow rig.
So I built my own tow rig. I bought the 1972 2500 4x4 Sierra Grande from the original owner. He was using in to haul firewood for the last 10 years or so. I don't think he ever cleaned the truck since I found the receipt of when he bought the truck buried in the glove box. He had the engine rebuilt once and converted it to run on propane. It never ran right after the conversion so he parked the truck. I found out that he never tightened down the distributor. Here is what I started with. |

Re: 1972 GMC Ultimate Tow Rig
Fast forward 2 years and this is what it looks like now. I'm not 100% done with it but I have been driving it for the past few months.
1991 5.9 Cummins Getrag 5 Speed NV205 Transfer case Dana 70 U with 4:11's and a Detroit Locker in the rear Dana 60 Heavy Duty with 4:11"s with Posi Locker in front. USFS STAHL utility Bed 35" ProComp "E" rated tires. My pictures are just a little bit over the size limit. Once I figure out how to re size them, I'll post them. I'll get them posted. It take a bit to edit them for size.

Re: 1972 GMC Ultimate Tow Rig
In the original pic it looks like a dually?? Did you find a bill of sale or the original window sticker?
Cool truck

Re: 1972 GMC Ultimate Tow Rig
Thanks.
I upgraded to a Dana70 rear axle. The service bed is just wide enough for a standard wheel. It did not look right with the dually's. I still have the original axles assemblies and wheels. The service body works great. I put all of my tools and trail spares for my other rigs in there. Last edited by D'Animal; 09-01-2008 at 10:15 AM. |

that's a beast... nice job... any pics of the build-up?
welcome, by the way... WE LOVE PICTURES! Did you change the fenders or is there still trim to add onto the "eyebrows"?

Re: 1972 GMC Ultimate Tow Rig
FYI an easy way to post multiple pictures is to open a www.photobucket.com account and upload them there.
Then select 10 pictures and "generate IMG link" copy that link into the message window and they will all appear on here... no resizing or delay in uploading required. I think it's a 10 picture per message limit...

Re: 1972 GMC Ultimate Tow Rig
Extremely Difficult. I was building this to be a heavy duty tow rig so I did not take any shortcuts. The stock frame in the starter area is the biggest challenge.
