coupler/rag joint??

I have two questions about this coupler/rag joint.

1. What is that wire in the center for? I see it connects a bolt and a pin, but why?

2. Are there two different size couplers for the 2wd, w/ power steering?

I am putting a 69 tilt in a 71 that had manual and I switched it over to power long ago. I used a gear box from a junk yard truck. I don't know what year it was, but it was a 67 -72.. I have two different sizes????

Maybe I can clean it up tomorrow so I can get a better pic....

I would guess it is a ground for the steering column shaft for the horn.

Re: coupler/rag joint??

Hmmmmmm,

The truck was a manual. I put power on it. The tilt column came from a P/S truck. The gearbox I put on when I converted a long time ago was from a 2wd.

I just don't know which one to order. I will have to get more/better pics to try and explain what I have/done.

Everyone’s help is very much appreciated.

Re: coupler/rag joint??

Devil's Advocate here....

If you have two rag joints, with one that fits the column and one that fits the steering gear box, what is the possiblility that you can take the two, and make one that will do what you need to do? The joint attaches to the flange on the gearbox. The studs hold the flange on the column. Is it doable?

Re: coupler/rag joint??

True. But the bolts are messed up on the one i need. I was also trying to replace the rag joint (rubber part) in it. How do you take the da** thing apart? How do yo uget the "cap studs" or what ever they are called off? I am stumped unless I just cut them off????? I don't know.

Re: coupler/rag joint??

Pull the bolts to separate the rag joint. Order the one for the type gearbox you have.IIRC,Manuals had a closer bolt pattern then the power.

What about the 2 that are not bolts? well, they don't look like bolts. How do they come apart? On the right and left of this pic.

Re: coupler/rag joint??

If yours is a rivit then the whole thing can be replaced, or some kits let you grind them off and give you ones with nuts on the back

Yeah, I was thinking I would have to grind them off. I don't want to pay $50 for a new one. I will cut them off. I already bought the replacment rag joint.

LMC is the one I was looking at. The years mess me up. I have a 71 w/power. Putting a 69 in it. Column that is.

Re: coupler/rag joint??

I'd suggest calling their 800 number, but my experience with doing that with LMC is getting someone who just takes orders and doesn't know anything else but how to access the item in a computer.

What about one of the vendors on the board?? There are a bunch of them. Go to the link at the home page. These guys know these trucks and they can talk them while walking at the same time. Don't give up without making that call.....

The two pins/rivets are threaded; at least they were on mine.
