Re: idk
it sounds like your rings are bad and that you are fouling plugs,
have u had any reacent engine work done? is the oil visible on the headers? that could be a bad gasket

Re: idk
i havnt had any recent work done, it never used to do this.
the oil comes i guess from the drive train if thats what its called. u knw the thing that turns between the tranny and the motor, the starter is kinda near it. |

Re: idk
If theres gas in your oil your fuel pump is bad or your carb floats are too high causing it to dump in fuel and wash the cylinders down causing the smoke but I would check the pump first. Did an oil line come loose from the back of the block? Do you have aftermarket guages with the plastic oil line?

if there is oil in between the motor and transmission, its probably a leaking rear main seal, if its coming out the exhaust possibly bad rings does your truck run idle ok? Any loss of power? jeff |

if you have a manual tranny it would be your clutch and flywheel, the torque converter and flywheel are for automatic trannys, if it looks like you are flinging oil onto the headers from the torque converter my guess is that the seal on the shaft under the torque converter, if the torque converter was pulled off at some point say for a tranny or engine swap the seal can dry out and crack alowing atf to leak from the torque converter which could cause it fling our from the inspection cover

Re: idk
Nor mine....they're laying on the garage floor
Sounds to me like you might want to take it and put it on a rack and have an experienced eyeball put on it. Do you have a mechanic friend that you trust who would help you figure out where the leak is? If oil is getting ON the headers, it's just like jef5150 suggested. You really need to get this thing up on a rack and start looking. Remember that gravity causes the leakage to drip to the lowest point, at which it may drop onto the pavement or a part of the truck. I'd suggest cleaning the engine to help in finding the source. It won't help determine internal problems, but it will help you find where the viewable problem may be.

Re: idk
looks like it is the rear main seal. is all that oil on the ground from ideling? You might even want to tow it in. tow+repair = cheaper then engine rebuild. good luck.

Re: idk
check the oil level and smell it. if it's is over full and reaks of gas then the carb is flooding and unburnt gas is going into the oil. if this is the case fix the carb and change the oil and filter before starting the motor.

But yes from those pics it looks like rear main. And if it's dumping that much oil at idle I wouldn't drive it. just my .02

Re: idk
the engine needs to come out, and the rear main seal (gasket) needs replaced more likely than not.
If you take it to a shop, they will probably recomend doing quite a few gaskets, and a timing chaing... and it's a good idea. |

Re: idk
rear seals may leak but i've never seen one cause plugs to foul ,10 quarts of oil&gas mixture in a 5quart pan has a tendency to leak , but what do i know? pull the engine like the experts advise it's far less effort than pulling a dipstick to rule out a possible cause of your leak and black plugs

Re: idk
Go to the parts store, any parts store, and get a Chilton or Haynes Manual. Either one will show you how to replace the oil pan gasket (it is a fairly simple process) and rear main seal (not so simple, but not impossible). The oil pan will not require any special tools (just knowledge and patience). The rear main seal is under the rear main cap, and will require torquing when put back on. All of this can be done w/o pulling the motor, but........if it were mine, and the rear main was leaking that bad, I'd seriously consider pulling the engine and see what else might need to be worked on while I was in there. Especially if the motor's over-all condition was generally unknown. And from the symptoms you describe, it's getting a little tired.
My 2 cents Jay
