Normal engine water temp

Newbie here, I have a 70 chevy 4x4 with a 454 and while sitting in traffic today where it was 105 degrees (phoenix arizona) my after market temp gauge went to 235 degrees, then would cool down after I started moving again usually into the 210-220 temp range. Is getting the temp to 235 degrees too high? What are normal operating temps for big blocks? This temp seemed very high to me, so any ideas to bring the temp down would be appreciated. It has a 2 core radiator, new water pump with 195 thermostat. Thanks in advance.

The cooling system uses pressure to further raise the boiling point of the coolant. Just as the boiling temperature of water is higher in a pressure cooker, the boiling temperature of coolant is higher if you pressurize the system. Most cars have a pressure limit of 14 to 15 pounds per square inch (psi), which raises the boiling point another 45 F (25 C) so the coolant can withstand the high temperatures.


I don't think brief temps of 235 would hurt anything -- but I'd feel better with a 4-core for that big-block. What type of fan are you running, and do you have a fan shroud?

It does seem somewhat on the high side even for 105 degrees.

I've had mine up in the high 190's and low 200's here Texas when it gets to 100 and haven't had any problems but, for starters, I would first check to make sure the system is working properly including your temp gauge.

Then check the lower radiator hose and make sure it's not collapsing on you when driving. It should feel firm and have no flex to it.

Flush the radiator and reduce the amount of antifreeze to maybe a 30% mixture. Also, make absolutely sure you have the proper radiator cap (if in doubt buy a new one) and install an overflow tank.

If it still runs higher than normal, install a shroud if you don't have one and maybe change the type of fan you are using. A four core radiator as Stocker mentioned might be another thing you can try.

It does have a fan shroud and has a fan clutch on it. Where can you get a 4 core radiator? Are they direct fits?

Hi,

Four core radiators should fit ok and can be found at most chain auto parts store.

I think 4 core radiators are used in vehicles with auto transmissions and a/c units.

Check and make sure that the fan clutch is working ok. I use a 180 degree thermostat in my 454.

I think 4-cores can be had for under $200 online... try www.radiators.com, and there are others.

My oem (with A/T and A/C) was a two-row and when it finally failed a couple years ago, I bought a 4-row, but I think I paid about $230-something... it was a direct-fit, though sometimes the lower support pads need to be replaced.

i got a bottle of water water (red boottle) at the parts store thinking this stuff can't work lowered my temps 10 degrees210-220 is pretty normal
