alt. bracket problems
hey guys i got a 69 GMC 1/2t with a 350engine and im having major problems finding the proper bracket to hold the stock type alt. it seems all of the after market brackets dont have enough slot to tighten the belt up .. in other words the smallest belt needs pry bars to get it on the pullies but i run out of slot to tighten the belt
before i rebuilt the eng i had the bottem of the alt bolted to the side of the ram horn exaust manifold. Now i have headers and the lower bracket (alt to header) was not working with the stock upper alt bracket so i tryed two different upper alt (after market) ones and another after market lower one Nothing seems too work... so what am i doing wrong ... can you help me out and show me some pics of you alt setup !!! thanks

Sorry, but I don't have any pictures.
When my son & I pulled the 292 and put a 350 in my '69 (was his @ the time), we took the alternator bracket set up off a '76 GMC/350. The "slider" is a big bracket that bolts to the water pump and intake manifold. The "pivot" bracket bolts to the water pump and to the cylinder head. The bolt to the head is about 6"-6 12" long and goes through a VERY long spacer. It was a direct bolt on and has caused no problems in the last, oooooh, maybe 10 years, or so. I also need to add that this moves the alternator to the right (passenger side) of the engine. When I need a new belt I either take the # off the old 1, or specify "'76 GMC, with a 350." Never a problem getting a replacement belt, or with the adjustment. The bolt on the "slider" is just about the middle of the slot. I hope that helped you a little bit. it's pretty easy to just measure the length of belt you need and ask for that specific length at your local parts store.
should be your easiest fix

Jim,can you tell me what the color of your truck is?I know it's blue,but what did G.M. call it?
The reason I ask is because in 1971 I had my 57 Chevy painted that color.The bodyman just called the dealer and got the code for the paint. I've been thinking about painting my current 57 that color again. Thanks,Mike. |
