harmonic balancer marks

still working on my buddy's 350-powered ('77 engine) Heep, the darn thing has two marks on the balancer - one is fairly shallow and I'd say looks like a factory mark, whereas the other one is deeper (1/16" or so) and could have been made with a Dremel tool - question is, which is the correct one? In other words, how deep are the factory timing marks on yer balancers? The deeper mark on this balancer looks like tis about 14 degrees or so before the other on as far as engine rotation goes... Suggestions, maybe a few pics of what y'all got? Thanks!

what possibly has happened is somebady has changed timing covers as some the timing tab is at 12 oclock and others have the tab at around 2 oclock so it,s possible they brought the engine to top dead center and scribed the new zero degrees in the balancer or the balancer itself has been changed and the same thing done

Or it might have slipped, and they "corrected" it. Of course, it would continue to slip, and they would both be wrong now.

Or maybe someone just dropped the balancer and dented the edge.

That's my guess, and the OP can do the same thing to make sure.

Set the engine to TDC. Once there, look at the balancer. Find out which mark lines up. If none, make a new one, but that probably means it's slipping.

Thats what I was thinking. Sounds like somebody made their own mark on there.
