original steel wheels

Anyone had any issues with original steel wheels?
I need new tires and have been debating whether to sandblast and paint my existing original wheels or buy some aftemarket steel wheels like the white or black spoked ones that seem quite common. I don't plan to get any chrome or aluminum wheels at this time.
I know a fellow who had a wheel split but that was 25 years ago and the truck was still relatively new. I assume, so long as they are not too rusted, that the wheels are probably safe to keep using. Thoughts?

As long as they are not the splint ring rims, i say go for it. I plan on sand blasting mine untill I can find some good aftermarket stuff witha good price tag on them.
