Old Navy Truck - Project Begins

Just got an Old Navy Truck last week. I read someone else's review of the body work and I agree that these trucks were done on a budget for display. My truck will not be getting done as a show truck so that is not really a problem. I am planning a flat paint, rougher rat rod look. Anyway, here's a couple of pictures. The truck went from the "straight out of the store look" to the pile of parts in about 3 hours yesterday. It was just a shell so teardown went easy.

Hoping to do a 3" chop and extended cab. 19GMC63 did some work in photoshop so I could get a preview.

Re: Old Navy Truck - Project Begins

looks like a really good start. I've read that most if not all the old navy trucks had new chrome. I'm finally able to go into those stores again. I couldn't stand to see those trucks as clothes racks.

Re: Old Navy Truck - Project Begins

I tried to buy one a few years ago, wasnt for sale at the time. It would be cool to leave it as an old navy truck if it aint gonna have shiney paint.

[QUOTE=sgtusmc;2880894]I've read that most if not all the old navy trucks had new chrome. [QUOTE]

The new chrome was the deciding factor. I basically got the truck for the same price that I would have paid to buy all the new chrome (2 bumpers, badges, grill, hubcaps and headlight rings), front/back windows and rubbers.
The frame is garbage as among other things, they took the engine out with a cutting torch. I will be putting it on a newer style frame so that is not a set back. Updates will follow probably after snow flies.

Looks like a fun project. Let us know what is under that "Old Navy" paint. Curious to see what shape these trucks are in.

I paid $1550.00 and a couple hundred dollars in gas to drive to pick it up. The gas money doesn't really count as that is all part of the adventure. I took a flat deck on vacation behind my 72 Blazer and came back home with the truck. You want to get the feeling that everyone on the highway is watching you, try pulling that truck back behind an old blazer with no top on it.

The previous owner had about a half dozen of them and put one of them on ebay. I did not win the ebay auction. $3300.00 was more than I wanted to pay for a shell. However, I was able to convince him to sell me one of the others.

At the end of the day it looks better than it really is but that was the whole purpose behind Old Navy using them. There are a few homemade patches and filler in a couple places but since I am planning a rougher finish I am not too worried. For $1550.00 and a few hours of driving I still think it was well worth it.

There have been a lot of them on ebay in lots of areas. I heard from the seller that there were around 250 of them.

Re: Old Navy Truck - Project Begins

If you got it for the price of the chrome you didn't get hurt. I sure hate that ratrod truck term though even if my truck qualifies at the momement. I'll be glad when that fad dies out and people start taking some care in building their low buck rigs again.

I'm with you Mr48, I prefer to describe mine as a "Resto-Mod" because everything works including the parking brakes, turn signals, electric wipers, etc.

Re: Old Navy Truck - Project Begins

I just bought the same truck a week ago for $800. I think they're worth at least $1500 considering that every chrome part is new. The one I bought has pretty decent steel underneath the Battleship Blue paint and glaze. I took an orbital sander with 80 grit and went straight to the metal with a few passes. Im only using this truck for a parts truck for my 53 GMC and it seems thats all you can use them for since they have no #'s or a title. Considering the cost of fenders, and chrome parts I think I came out way ahead. Just the four fenders and shipping would had cost me $2000.

The frame is not useable, the rearend is empty, there are no components for a drivetrain, and they even have bogus hubs holding each wheel on with 2 bolts. This truck is so stripped that I push it around with one hand in the yard with my friend sitting in it steering.

Call it what you want but im going for a ratrod look with all up to date components including AC
