tranny issuse

Today, I had a lifter needing some more adjusting, and the bumpers needed installing, so we did that. Got everything running, and took off for a test drive. When I tried to put it into L2 it wouldn’t go past drive.

Very strange indeed, all of a sudden with no work done to the trany or anything even close to it. I have not had time to check into the linkage other than just a visual from the engine compartment. I thought maybe the dipstick broke, but its fine. Thought maybe the linkage had come loose and was fouling itself but its ok, seemingly, too.

Anyone had this happen before? Ideas? its as th350 auto btw

thats what i was thinking, but you can see the whole thing move from the top,,,,hum if it wasnt dark out id......lol

Take it off at the end of the column. You will be able to tell if its in the column or linkage going down from there...

I had similar problems on my 68 years ago. I am betting that when you pull the linkage off the end of the column you will find that the transmission shifts fine but the column is binding up. If this is all it is then pulling a few parts off and greasing/oiling will fix your problem. When you shift from P-R-N-D does the shift lever pull towards you easily or not? In other words, the shifter should move and inch or two towards you and freely "spring" back into place. If not then it is definitely a gummed up column.

Good points but it would go down and then just stop as if it was never meant to go any further, you could pull it towards you fine. When you pulled it down hard to try to force it, there would be like a metallic thud and it would just stop.

well... as some of you know i bought one of the new aftermarket ramhorn exhaust manifolds. They look great, seam to be good quality, they fit great, I would recommend them…

however….they do fit just a bit different and it moved the exhaust into the line where the shifter moves. So it bottoms out in drive..lol, I can feel he shifter moving when I tap the gas. Not a hard fix really, but im going to let my favorite old Mexican exhaust guy do it, and build me a few more hangers.

Im happy that it wasn’t the trany.
