Balancer issue, need help
I have 283 that I am in the process of adding power steering. I was starting to add a pulley when I noticed no bolt in the balancer? It is threaded (7/16 fine) and I have tapped it out to make sure it is clean. My question is if I get a bolt and washer, does it seat down in the opening on the balancer or does it need to seat on the face of the balancer?
Also bought a add on pulley, it is still about a quarter in off of the power steering pulley, can I add washers to space it out? I can’t move the pump back any do to the brackets, so the add on crank pulley has to come out a bit. |

Re: Balancer issue, need help
The bolt is to hold the balancer in place so it would have to be on the pulley itself. From the pic, it seems that if you put a bolt and washer in, the pulley would be pressed farther back and maybe you won't need any spacers for the pulley.

Re: Balancer issue, need help
you can get a balancer bolt and washer at your local auto parts, then go to lowes, and buy a real good quality bolt with the same thread, use that bolt and the washer and pull the balancer on tight then remove it and replace it with the other bolt, should look something like this when you get done

Re: Balancer issue, need help
It's fully seated in the picture; I am confused about the hole though. All balancers I have seen in pictures look nothing like this one.
This was a stock 283 that has had some work done to it, at least a cam and possibly a crank. So am not sure if it's stock or what this balancer is from? The truck was a manual, now its automatic transmission. I don't know if that makes a difference in the crank or not. I just went and picked up a grade 8 bolt and washer, I am wondering if it sets all the way down in the hole? Or do I mount the pulleys then seat the bolt and washer down on top the pulleys? |

Re: Balancer issue, need help
You may need to shop around and look at different pullys. They came in different offsets.

Re: Balancer issue, need help
A lot of the 283's did not have a bolt on the balancer. Mine is a 1967 283 Power Pack motor and the crank does not even have a hole in it.
