Post fuel injection

absolute power corrupts absolutely. My 84 gmc p/u 350/300. it has hedders manifold a large new Q/J. runs good. but has terrible
gas mileage. I have considered a aftermarket
FI unit but i cant handel the cost. i was wondering if it would be possible to install
a stock unit of of a 87 truck, I would have to get every thing harness,computer every thing. is this posible and sost efective. thanks roland

What type of gears are running in the rear? Cooling system? A/C?

Options: use a 1 inch spacer between the carb and intake.
For years of economy change over to a 700R4 transmission.
How long has it been since it had a good tuneup? spark plugs, wires, HEI upgrade,

New Q/J? Can you tells us more?

I have an 86 4x4 with a 400, 700r4, 3.08 gears, and a q-jet. I get about 17 on the highway and 14 in town which isn't too shabby in my opinion. My truck is also running the stock size tires which makes for good mpg. I am about to rebuild my carb due to a leaking gasket and install a 1 inch spacer so mileage should improve slightly. I would try gchemist's suggestions before going to fuel injection. The quadrajet is hard to beat.

my truck has a gm crate motor (350/300. it has all the goodies. a edelbrock q/j and performer manifold. it has a accel blue print
dist. it has heddersand the exhust is real good. I also run a kn air filter. it has a 700/r4 and a 3.08 gear.this truck has been on a dyno and a gas analyzer. the truck passes with flying colors. and it still gets bad mileage. how hard is it too take a comlpete fi system off a 87 truck.

It is physically not that hard to swap the TBI injection off an 87 up truck. The center manifold bolt holes will have to be modified slightly because the angle is different on the older heads than the newer ones. If you strip an 87 for everthing, the wiring and computer and all the harnesses than everything shouldn't be too bad. The problem is that a stock TBI is not going to adequately support your motor. A better intake, upgraded injectors and custom chip should be able to do it but you will have to spend some dollars on top of the stock setup to use it on your engine. But the key is find a complete 87 to strip so you can get everything to swap including the in tank pump unless you already have an adequate elctric pump.

More suggestions. Change the stock tire to a 255R60R15. There about one taller than stock. Check the fuel filter. Any fuel leaks on our fuel pump? Fuel lines? Change the spark plugs?

If you are interested in FI, there some after market TBI units/kits that run less than $700.00(?) I'll have to check some of my catlogues. I'll get back with you with more info.
