Early 205 Q?
I have a NP205 from a`70,I believe.I cleaner it up on Sunday and was going to remove the front driveshaft and free it from the crossmember.I never paid attention to the fact that it doesn`t have the double cardon joint. What does it take to use a dbl cardon?I have a`71 205 from a 3spd w/a dbl cardon shaft.I haven`t pulled the`71 case so I haven`t looked into it.

Re: Early 205 Q?
As far as I know, nothing has to change with the NP205 transfer case itself.
I know my 69 K20 with the Rockwell T221 did not have a double cardon joint but when I lifted the truck I had to have one put on the transfer case side of the driveshaft. I didn't have to make any physical change to the transfer case.

Re: Early 205 Q?
I had a feeling I was asking you this question and maybe someone else would answer. So the yoke out of the case is the same,I guess. That`s what I was wondering. If I had to break into it I`d want to do it now, before I paint and install and I can roll it around on a bench.I think I`ll leave it be until it asks for service.

Re: Early 205 Q?
The flange for the double cardan will exchange, of course if the spline counts are the same... some early 205's had a 10 spline output and some had 30 splines.

Re: Early 205 Q?
I`m talking`70 vs`71.I`m thinking they`d be the same. Are you saying there were some 30-splines made back then or are you refering to the later ones around 1980-up?(whenever they all went 30-spline)

Re: Early 205 Q?
I've seen mix and matched t-cases. PO may have swapped a front output into an earlier case, etc.

Re: Early 205 Q?
The 205s went to 30 spline front output when GM replaced the yoke with a flange. Of course the 'trick' thing is to really upgrade to a ford 32 spline front output----then you have quite a variety of choices for either flanges or yokes

Re: Early 205 Q?
Yeah, I'd be interesested some parts--- and on the 10 spline flange, can't say as if I've ever seen one, just the small cv yoke and a couple of other yokes that seem to have gone by the wayside as far as availability goes

Re: Early 205 Q?

Re: Early 205 Q?
Did you ever get this figured out? Don't know if this will help but here is the style that I'm using on my K5's NP205
![]() I don't have a clue what year the NP205 is that I swapped in but if I had to guess I'd be pretty sure it is an early 70's NP205. Here is a pic of it. ![]() As you can see, when I got the NP205 it didn't have a double cardon joint installed.

Re: Early 205 Q?
My K-20 does not have the doube cardon joint either. Should The driveline in 4wd be ok for 50mph on dirt roads, no lift? I am guessing it should, just wanted to see what anyone has experienced here.
Thanks in advance!! Frank

Re: Early 205 Q?
As long as it connects the axle to the t-case with out vibrating, your drive line is fine... when you lift these trucks, you need the double cardon to split the operating angles between three joints as it's too much for two/

Re: Early 205 Q?
Thanks grendel,
I'll put it back together then. It just struck me as something was wrong with it or it was put on by the P,PO. The 70 Jimmy I had, the 72 K-5 Parts Blazer and my 70 Blazer currently all have the same front driveshaft with the cardon joint. So when I got this 70 K-20 Pickup it stuck out to me me that something was amiss! LOL Frank

That said, if it fit in there before and didn't vibrate, you're fine. ![]() Take a look at the picture and you can see that as the axle moves, you have more ujoints to break the angles created by the axle changing position. Last edited by FormerMember; 09-23-2008 at 08:02 AM. |

Re: Early 205 Q?
I have a TH350/NP205 combo I just pulled from a`70 Blazer and it had a dbl cardon joint.I think new things sometimes get tryed out on only part of the model line-up to test how they work, maybe.I`ve seen this on other areas and other vehicles.Or,since the auto was a new item the new joint design started there.`70 was the second year for auto in Blazers and first for trucks.I never had a`70 automatic truck and can`t say if they would have the double joint.I`d bet they do.I know by`71 all configurations did, even the Blazer 3spd/Dana20.

Re: Early 205 Q?
I'm probably a little late for input, but my T-221 set-up had the double joint at the front axle. When I replaced it with a 205, I got the tranny, X-fer & front d-shaft all together from a '70 (?) blazer. There was not a double joint on the pieces from the blazer. But the d-shaft bolted in w/o any mods.
Oh yeah, the d-shaft from my T-221 was too long to fit after the swap and the d-shaft from the blazer was perfect.
