GM350CID/290HP question
I was just wondering if anyone that has a 350/290 is on the same situation. You turn on the truck, but u have to give it a little gas, and it starts right away, almost instantaneous, but if u dont give it gas on the first atempt, it takes a while to start and then u have to kinda like prime the carb with the throttle.
I bought a regular mechanical fuel pump, like the Carter design, i have a GM Racing Mech pump but i cant put it in, i will have to grind the right side engine cross member so the fitting can go in there. Does this starting problem is due to the pump not having enough PSI for 350 engines? Thanks.

Re: GM350CID/290HP question
All carbed engines do this to some extent. The fuel in the carb has to be "Squirted" into the "Venturi's" to atomize with air and become volatile.Standard procedure for new cars in the 50-60's were to pump the pedal to the floor one time, release, then crank. This allowed the accelerator pump to squirt fuel into the engine. It later "Set" the automatic choke also. All of this is done by the electronics on EFI and so no "pump" is required.

Yeah, more a carb issue than fuel pump, but doesn't mean the carb is "BAD" just needs a pump of fuel to get er going!

Re: GM350CID/290HP question
That's the deal. You have to give it a little bit of pedal to start it off. Sounds kinda antiquated doesn't it? It's not necessary with efi. We've had fuel injected engines now for a long time and I know a few people who still mash the pedal upon startup just out of old habit. Some will even pump it several times before turning the key...
