RamHorns or Headers?
Well, I am about to buy the truck in my sig from my brother for hopefully 300-500$. It has RamHorns on it. I know the old hot rodders used RamHorns. I want to know, what will give me more power? Headers? or RamHorns?

Re: RamHorns or Headers?
I've always read that ramhorns are one of the better flowing exhaust manifold designs. Do they flow as much as headers? I don't know...but if you've already got em and they're in good shape, I'd run em.

Re: RamHorns or Headers?
From what I was told by the man who built my engine and built $50K racing engines, headers will not give you anything worth the extra cash they cost, until you get into the 8-10,000 rpm range. Ram horns are just fine for most applications, according to him.
My experience also lies in the older equipment I own, CAT 4 cyl diesel exhaust is basically a center dump, my 1936 CLETRAC is a center dump, and my old International I-14 has a center dump. Most Industrial, hard working equipment engines seem to have center dump exhaust manifolds. There has to be something to it. Oh I am sure there's some techno data that says you can get a tad more here and there with their product, but all these companies have a wealth of experience to support their decisions. Boils down to the budget if you ask me. Frank

Re: RamHorns or Headers?
For street applications rams horns will do fine. The headers will get a lot hotter, and can be a PITA.
What are your plans? s/t

Re: RamHorns or Headers?
I use the vete fuel injection ram horns on my truck. The are a larger diameter inside and flow better than the standard ones. For a street truck I think they flow very well. If they were good enough for a fuelie vette, they are good enough for my near stock motor.

Re: RamHorns or Headers?
My understanding is that there is a reason why truck rams are smaller, and that is to raise the low-end torque. Same with the intake. For a stock motor I would go with the truck ones. I could be wrong tho, I've never had anything else.

Re: RamHorns or Headers?
Thanks for the info guys. I'm gonna keep em, get em ported and polished for better flow. And hopefully run 2 1/2" - 3" straight pipes with glasspacks dumping at the 2 piece driveshaft cross member.
Engine plans = Edelbrock 575 Carb, Edelbrock Torquer intake, all aluminum heads, serpentine system, "raised" CHEVROLET valve covers, dual air plenum intake, dual electric fans. Built to about 375-400HP. Total price = about 2500$ Oh yeah, and a built TH350 with 3:42:1 posi.

Re: RamHorns or Headers?
Which intake, the Torker or the dual plenum? The Torker is open with straight runners for high rpm torque/high rpm flow. This is a manifold that benefits where the headers would also.
If ramshorns are adequate for the motor then so would 2 1/4" duals.Any motor that would run best with 2 1/2-3" exhaust would run better with headers, too.

Re: RamHorns or Headers?
Dual air plenum, it looks like a dual air filter, you know the tubing and whatnot.
This: http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te.../photo_09.html Well now maybe I'll do some more research into intake manifolds. Oh and a Lunati street cam.

Re: RamHorns or Headers?
i like the rams i think they look much better then headers, im not 100% on the resoning but in the stock modified circle track racing that goes on around where i live, the races always run rams or a version of the rams, im not sure if they are regulations teling them to run them, but 100 laps at about 80-130 mph on a dirt track rams work better then the cars that do ocasionaly have headers

I would just plan on keeping/getting it in good running condition for now then. Save money for gas and girls... The trruck will be there for upgrades for awhile...

Re: RamHorns or Headers?
Yeah, just get it together and drive her for a bit. Match port the rams if you like. You can always change to headers later. Performer rpm intakes are hard to beat, IMHO.
