help

im new to engines, and i am trying to replace the original timing gears on my 74 350, i pulled the gear attatched to the cam and the chain no problem, but i cant get the crank gear off, i tried the only pronged puller i have to pull the old gear off the crank and it moved a little then my puller busted,
there has to be a better way to pul this gear off
thanks

Re: help

i've had luck taking a rubber headed striking mallet and tapping it back towards the motor then see if the key way will come out. if not then find a bigger gear puller.

Re: help

thats normal but you will probably want to remove the harmonic ballancer key before removing the gear , to be on the safe side.

Re: help

Some will not agree with this, but since you are not going to use that crank gear anyone, take a steel chisel, and hit between the teeth of that gear a couple times. That cast gear will break right off. Just make sure to put a rag behind that gear to prevent anything from going into the pan. I've been doing it that way for years.
