stall speed question

got a 70lwb
454 bbc
stock components in bottom end
stock heads
small cam i believe somewhere around 560 lift
air gap intake
780 holley
hei dizzy
th350 trans
3200- 3600
4:11 posi
295 60 16 drag radials


if have been told by a couple local gear heads the my stall is to high and im loosing low end torque on my bbc, which in return is hurting my et's (if i raced it yet)

during a burn out with my street tires onthe tires seem to barely move. Ill be revving 2200 to 3000 and "spectators" say the tires are barely moving.

could this be because of to big of stall speed?

im shooting for anything and everythign here.

I figured this mild bbc would be compareable to my 383 that was build. but it just has yet to make me feel like it was worth the swap and money and effort.....

I agree with SWB for the most part. There are other things that will move the peak TQ aroung in RPM. Intake runner length, header tube size/length ect. How ever I feel the cam dictates 60-75% of the rpm range.

For optimum ET, you want your converter to flash pretty much where your peak TQ is. That will hit as hard as it can and move you.

When doing a burn out, it sounds like you are riding the converter if your only reving to 2,200-3,000 with a 3,200-3,600 converter. Get that thing reved to 4,500-5,000. Also try to get it in to high gear when doing your burn out. That'll warm the tires up real good.

A drag radial only takes 4 to 6 rotations and it is warming up and trying to grab . With that big a stall to smoke the tires you need to be at or around rated stall or you are making transmission heat quick and pumping hot fluid to the rest of the trans .

With a 244/244 cam, I don't think your stall is too big.....but it is probably about as big as you'd want to run with that combo IMO. I agree w/others, you should be ~5k rpm for a burnout.

ummm are you doing this burnout in 1st gear? With the 2.42 gear reduction of the Th350, and the 4.11 gears,,,, not accounting for ANY slip through the convertor, your only getting 300 or so tire rpm for 3500engine rpm. Burnouts are about tire/wheel speed. You need to be getting into high gear and getting some tire speed for a second or two, not just sitting there grinding away at low speeds. Like said, that will build a LOT of trans heat that will hurt performance and consistancy.

By the same token, a TH350 simply HATES to come out of the burnout in 2nd gear. I promise you that if you come out of the waterbox in 2nd gear and let the truck 'hook up' under power,,,, it will be just a matter of time before your looking for a new trans.

Completely forgot about that . Marv is correct always make the third gear shift before coming out . Locking the tires under power in 2nd will kill a th 350 quickly .

Nitrous Times:
5.785 1/8 @ 118.65 with a 1.336 60ft
9.168 1/4 @ 142.58 with a 250 shot dead out of the hole!

I run a full manual Turbo 350 and when I do my burnout I put it in 3rd to start, flash the converter, bring it up to 6200rpm right away light my shift light a couple times and let it out till it starts to hook and then stage. My tranny is worked over pretty good, extra clutches different sprag etc. and it has 3 seasons on it still working fine running 10's in a truck that scales over 4000# with driver.
