Little by Little
Last year I replaced the front wheel bearings on my`72 K2500 because one was bad. It`s had a good bit of free-play since I bought it.There was still verticle play so this summer I replaced the ball joints. It still has free-play in the steering so I checked while someone turned the wheel. The sector shaft has play at the bushing where it comes out of the box.Time for a rebuild or new steering gear.I decided to use one I`ve had around for a good while.I ordered it for a truck that I was going to do a ground-up like-new resto on that never happened.So...it`s going on my driver.
The blue truck I sold last summer had all the front end and brakes tip-top.This one has always needed alot of work in those areas because when I bought the blue one it needed everything just to be driveable. So,it went ahead of the GMC.I did the front brakes, master cyl,and booster when I did the front bearings.I just did the rear brakes back in the spring. So,little by little I`ll have this thing trackin`straight and stoppin`square. Next, springs and shocks, then tires.

Re: Little by Little
I bought it in`01.The motor kicked the bucket 6 months later. It sat until`04 when I decided to take the motor I built from a truck that needed a cosmetic resto, just sitting. It got new exhaust and runs great.
When I got it I couldn`t stand the seat, arm rests, and dash pad were covered in vinyl and it had a later GMC steering wheel. The first thing I did was cover the seat with a Sierra-style cover, repro steering wheel, dash pad,and arm rests.Still needs carpet bad.It just keeps getting bumped back on the list. This truck is a rolling restoration.Although,I don`t consider the resto to be started yet.I used to jump in and get alot done right away on my vehicles.I`m learning to be patient these days.Bit by bit it`ll get done.It has been running hot at times for awhile, too.I`ve messed with the coolant, new thermostat, fan clutch/fan,and now I had a radiator reconditioned.I`m installing that with this latest tear-down.I think the old radiator was getting pretty gunked up and my radiator man said if that thing didn`t leak when he got done rodding it he`d go (blank) himself(and pay for the lessons, too).I guess by the time it gets hot next year I`ll know it`s fixed.I`ve just been babying it since last year. Looks like next year will be the year of a smooth ride and carpet. This was the year of the cool and straight ride and last year was the year of the ride that stops(carried over to his year).Hopefully by the following year it will be the year of fresh paint and clear windshield. My big plan for this truck has always been to get a Four Wheel Camper for it.They are those low-profile slide-ins that crank up to normal height.

Re: Little by Little
That`s a picture of the motor from last year.I changed the filter after taking this picture and used the factory spacer/breather.It think it runs alot better that way.
Last year the plan was to sell this one since I hadn`t done alot to it and it was so nice.I had alot of work into the blue Chevy and liked it just how it was. But,everyone wanted that blue & white truck. So,I sold that since it`s not like I don`t like this one.I`m going to like it alot more with the steering tightened up.

Re: Little by Little
Radiator`s done. So,it`s ready for warm weather next year.I`m so far behind I think I`m ahead.I just need a chance to get the steering back in.My`92 needed the coolant flushed and it needed tires.Little by little.

Re: Little by Little
i hear ya, with todays economy i belive most are little by little, just seems with all older cars and trucks once ya tear into one part, ya always find something else that jus has to be replaced or rebuilt to make the prior part to work properly, and so on... and so on.. well thats my excuse to the wife anyhows. dont always work. but thats my story and im stickin to it. i belive youll be happy with the 2500 once it all comes together. so keep chucking away at it and youll have it.

Re: Little by Little
If it were for little by little, I'd have no progress either - life just has a way of dictating what i have time to do - which is not much lately! Keep at it Tim!
