Pre-65 vs. Post-65 Rear End ?'s
I know some 64 & earlier trucks use a 'drop-out' style pumpkin like a F**d 9" vs. the 65 & later salsbury (sp?) style that requires the gears to be set-up internally within the housing. What does it take to get the 5-lug pattern on a 64 w/o swapping to a later housing?
I've found differing info. Since it's the weekend, I can't confirm by calling manufacturers so I thought I might check w/some of the board members & see what they've done.

Re: Pre-65 vs. Post-65 Rear End ?'s
I replaced my original low geared rearend with a 1968 low milage 3.73 posi.
It is identical except for the panhard rod mount. I have since had my axles drilled to 5on5. That was easy!

Re: Pre-65 vs. Post-65 Rear End ?'s
60-62 had a drop-out center
63-64 had 12 bolts with welded pan-hard bar mount and 17 spline axles 65-66 had 12 bolts with forged pan-`hard mounts (housing) and 30 spline axles If you go aftermarket you will need to get spider gears for an earlier housing either from a junkyard to aftermarket. Also, 63 housing had backing plates pressed on so to get disc brakes you would have to weld caliper mounts on instead of bolting them on...just some fyi |

Re: Pre-65 vs. Post-65 Rear End ?'s
My buddy looked under the bed & said it had a 12-bolt cover so I'm guessing it's the 12-bolt w/17-spline axles.
CPP sells a kit w/30-spline axles, drums, spider gears, gasket, & .500" studs for $500 but we'll prob snag a 68 rear 12-bolt & swap in aftermarket axles w/some local parts house 71-72 drums.

Re: Pre-65 vs. Post-65 Rear End ?'s
I just redrilled my '64.Had to weld up one hole, turn down the axle hub,and used new '71 up drums from the parts store.
Unless I'm mistaken the '67 up rear end is 1 1/2" wider than a '66 down,if that matters to you. My mistake, you are right. The 2wd 5 lug rearends are the wider ones. Last edited by olsofti; 10-13-2008 at 11:57 AM. Reason: updated info |

Re: Pre-65 vs. Post-65 Rear End ?'s
From what I know, the 'late' 70 year model thru 72's are the wider rear housing. Early 70 model & before are the narrower housing.

My 68 rear is the same width as a 64.
72 disk axles will not fit, I tried.

CPP has the axles you want. You just slide them in and they come with the drums you'll need. Classic peformance products Is what it stand for. I think.
