Saw only 5 of our trucks on 1300 mile New England trip

Where the heck do you guys find parts...or whole trucks for that matter? We just got back from a New England road trip that covered approx. 1300 miles. This wasnt just a cruise down main hwy's, we hit mostly smaller two lane roads and back roads.

We saw a 69 or 70 burb in Maine. Non running, a bunch of guys were working on it. I think it was New Hampshire where we saw a multi colored truck with the plow all hooked up ready for the snow to fly. There was a GMC flatbad that was made into boat hauler camping type rig. In Vermont, either Stockbridge or Grafton (Ive forgotten which) there was a green truck with vanity plates parked in someones driveway. There were only a few letters on the plate. And the last one I caught in my rear view mirror merging on to the hwy in Connecticut, it was a 67 or a 68.

For as much ground as we covered I was expecting a lot more. If I took a drive like that around here, I bet I would see between 20 and 50 of our style trucks.

Sorry, no pics of any of these. Maybe next trip =)

northeast and midwest salt and snow destroy the trucks, most of them crumble back to earth

I need to start shipping all the trucks I can find out there. Seems like a person could make a killing. Well except for the shipping costs and the poor economy..lol.

honestly.. they aren't here. the one or two that go up for sale locally each year have 10K+ asking prices.

that's why i bought my '70 from california and my '69 from maryland... and drove both of them home to NY. it's cheaper!

amen to that.
Every rusted turd that hasn't desolved in the rain here has a starting price of 4500 bucks. If it is anywhere close to being decent, bump that number up to about 6000.

Re: Saw only 5 of our trucks on 1300 mile New England trip

They are all rotten, & with the junk being high over the summer, a lot were crushed. I see them for sale occasionally on Craigslist etc. Most of them are projects and in the $2k range with rotten inner roofs. I missed a '71 LWB Factory BB/Air for $3250 that looked to be in good shape about 4 months ago.

The thing to do would be get a car carrier (one of those 10 car haulers) Go out to western TX/NM/AZ/Western CO area and fill it up with trucks & cars that are desireable. You can def makes some good $$$.

I know of a car builder in CT who did that - he bought 10 AD Chevy's '47-'54 shipped them all back to CT. He kept the best for himself and sold the rest.

If I had some cash to sit on, I would do it.

When i got my first truck back in 97, that's exactly what I wanted to do.When i was still stationed at Ft hood Tx, I was gonna haul one or two at a time from Tx to Ohio, had a buddy up here that wasmore than willing to sell them up here.
But, being a soldier means being broke, so it never got off the ground.

Re: Saw only 5 of our trucks on 1300 mile New England trip

Not surprising. When I moved to York County ME several years ago, I practically had to promise the mechanic that I'd park mine until May (to stay away from the salt) before he'd give me the inspection sticker. Vehicles over fifteen years old are fairly rare.

I had my eye on a rough '70 4x4 up there. When I went back in the spring, the frame had fallen in. It just broke under the weight and left headlights pointed 20' up a tree and taillights 20' up another tree. Sad.

Me and my uncle are starting that. He has northern hay and a big rig, not much hay this year grown here. So we'll find a cheap barely rusty truck, he loads it up and brings it back and sells the $1k truck for $3k. We are having a hard time finding people who want that much hay...

Here is an example. I think he will let it go for $800-900. Property tax is due very soon here so even more good deals out there. http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/cto/874641775.html

In running condidtion that would be worth 2.5k-3k here in New England. The only problem right now is the economy, people might be scared to spend $ on toys.

I guess the biggest draw back would be that you have to sit on a large amount of $ for a while if the trucks/cars don't sell right away

I think the 67 was $4500

these are the only trucks that you find for less than $5K around PA....

Re: Saw only 5 of our trucks on 1300 mile New England trip

There are these trucks everywhere, local survivors to imports from the sunbelt. The thing is,they keep them in and baby them in the N/E and other places with fairly harsh weather. In the summer they are more abundant, too. You`d be surprised how many of these trucks are everywhere. Now,when we go out west we do get to see alot more drivers of all types and I love that.
It`s no secret that bringing trucks with good bodies back tp the rustbelt is a good idea.People have been doing it for years.I`ve done a good bit myself. There are alot of costs and a smart buyer will pay the money.I`ve known people who take vehicles that are in demand out west from the east and bring back neat older stuff from out west.Transportation is just so high and it`s so specialized.I just pay the shippers.

Hey, that was at Carlisle! My pops was considering one of those cabs. That maroon and black truck looked ok from 20 feet, but when I got close every panel was either smashed or full of bondo and had rust bubbles everywhere.

Seriously though, Carlisle is THE place to go, even though prices tend to be high. I was 16 back in '97 in southwest NY and my '67 came from SC. I got offers ALL THE TIME to buy it. It was by far the most solid original truck I had ever seen. All the ones my family had (plow trucks, 1 ton flatbeds, parts runners, etc) all had holes in the floors, doors, beds, fenders, and that was back in the 90's. There were a few in the 'yards, but most were useless as far as body parts. Again, that was over 10 years ago. My pops says he hardly ever see's any anymore unless he's at a show.

When I moved to SC I just had "another one of them" 67-72 chevy trucks. No offers to buy, etc, just another old truck. Even now, down here, the yards are about dry, but I do see a couple every once in a while rollin' down the road. And of course, I get to see a nice blue '67 shorty every day
