Re: 71-72??

ok Andy, I see the rosebud rivits....

found a pic.... this is off my 69... my 71 or what ever it is has regular rivits on it. so the cab must have been changed. or something

Re: 71-72??

I have the same thing going on with my truck.
Titled and vined as 71 but almost all the details that is different on 71 vs 72 is 72 details.
Vin and title 71 (CE241Z646752)
Doors 72
Inside Rear view mirror 72
Big block motor mounts 72
Cheyenne Super Glove Box Door Emblem 71
No glove box door sticker.
Vin plate attached with the correct rosebud rivits. I found remainigs of old rivits in the cab corner though.
There were no numbers on the frame where it is supposed to be.
I'm pretty sure the cab been swapped to a 72 cab at some time.
Same truck on all pics, the yellow is after restorationIrepaint.

Here's a pic I saved from this forum, I think it is LHM pointing out the spot where the number is supposed to be.

Re: 71-72??

I have a 72 GMC that has the rearview mirror attached to the cab, not the window. I have matching numbers on the VIN tag on the cab (held on with rosebud rivots) and the SPID on the glove box. Where there any 72's with the mirror attached here?

Re: 71-72??

no, but you could still get those mirrors at the dealer pretty cheap. I know personally I hate the glue on kind, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Re: 71-72??

Oh but wait. Here is another idea. If the cab was a camper cab (like my '68) it never had a mirror mounted. Mine didn't have the back cut out either. So my '68 has a mirror like a '72, and no holes in the roof for the old mirror. Just another thought.

Re: 71-72??

Didn't the 72' also have a leaf sprung rear? My 71' is track arm rear and my buddies 72' is leaf sprung?

Re: 71-72??

nope... 1/2 ton chevys are trailing arm set-up while 3/4 tons step up to leaf springs. Though the GMC 1/2 tons are a leaf spring rear end.

partially correct. Chevies could be had in both trailing arm setups as well as leaf springs. Most were trailing arms. GMCs were exactly the opposite. Mostly leaf springs, but could be had in either. 3/4 tons could also be gotten in trailing arm setups and were in fact more common than lead spring setups in Chevy. As a matter of fact the 3/4 ton trailing arms have a reinforcement piece welded on for extra strength. The same price that other companies sell. Hope that helps a little more.

Re: 71-72??

Thanks for the info Shawn, I know his 72' is original as the day his grand-dad bought it, and it's a 1/2 ton Chevy not a 1/2 ton GMC...

Re: 71-72??

it probably is all original, just has the optional rear suspention.
The only chevy trucks 67 - 72 that came automaticly with leafs, are 4X4, longhorn, and one ton... that's it. Otherwise, it is an optional reas spring set up.
