Truck is dead

I haven't worked on the '79 in forever but needed to move it out of the driveway yesterday to clean the concrete. It started right up and I just drove it over into the yard 'temporarily'. Anyways, it got flooded when I went to move it back so I just left it there overnight and charged the battery too. Got it started a couple of time this morning but it kept flooding and dying. The last time I cranked it I thought I heard something 'pop' and now I have no power anywhere--no lights, radio, nothing. Is there a fusible link or something somewhere that controls all this???

Re: Truck is dead

'Underhood' lol.

It was so quick that it may have been a figment of my imagination. If I had to say I 'think' it was underhood, passenger side. . .

I know, not the best description, but that's all I got at this point.

Re: Truck is dead

ok.. so, maybe it sounded like a duh! type question.

I was thinking you may have been inside the cab when it popped.

Battery? - I know u said u charged it... check wiring... at the starter, and battery... get a spare battery or buy a new one? That's where I'd start.

Pop to me sounds like an ARC?

Re: Truck is dead

There is a fuseable link in the wires going to the starter. You could also check the fuses under the dash too.

I'll get to check it out later--just weird that I lost all power. I seem to remember a fusible link on the firewall?? Or am I thinking of something else. . .

Re: Truck is dead

You could also check the main cable that runs from the battery to the starter, it may be loose or broken.. that's happened to me before.

Re: Truck is dead

I had the same thing happen to me with an older pickup, #1 thing I would check is the battery, I know it sounds dumb but this sounds like exactly what happened to me. The bat was dead, It started I turned on the AC and poof, everything gone, I bought a new battery and everything was fine until the day I sold it. Good luck!

Re: Truck is dead

I helped a friend that had a very similar issue. It turned out that one of the wires on the power block (not sure if that is the correct term) on the firewall had broken. Just looking at the wires they looked fine. The wire had disintigrated inside the boot and was able to be seen the problem until the wire was moved. Here is a picture for reference.

Re: Truck is dead

Yea I was wondering about the battery or the power distribution block. Firedrag79 posted a picture of what it looks like. Should be up above the brake booster assembly on the firewall towards the top. Good luck with it.

Re: Truck is dead

Thanks guys--I am tied up with kids and work this week so it will be next week before I get to tinker. Now that it needs something to get it back on the road I kinda have the itch to do more to it--so, maybe this was a good thing!
