Can a 2wd tranny be made to fit a 4wd??

I heard this awhile back ago. and if it has been asked before apologize for not searching. I have a 84 Chevy 4wd, Th350. The trans is weak. I have good 350 2wd. I had heard you could remove the back piece off the tranny and cut the shaft down in order to fit the transfer case. Is that true?? Has anybody done it?

You would have ti disassemble the 4x4 trans to use the shaft so why not just rebuild it.

It is not as simple as "cutting off" the longer (2 wheel drive) output shaft. The splined section is only at the end, if you could cut it short enough, the splines would be gone. The output shaft is the last part to be taken out of the case....at total rebuild is in order.

Or you could build a spacer that goes between the transfer case adapter and the transmission housing, this would take up the extra spline on the output shaft.

I've seen that done, but you would need to shorten your rear drive-shaft and lengthen the front one.
