Fuel filter

Anybody use a metal inline fuel filter on their engine. I have the glass filter on there but I heard too many stories of engine fires.

Why not go with the regular filter from Napa, last long and cheap

Re: Fuel filter

I am running a holly 650 carb with with holly street dominator intake. The glass filter looks good but I want safety. I saw a few online performance shops selling performance engines and they all had metal filters. So i was wonderig what everyone used.

Re: Fuel filter

Guess what is was leaking on mine???????????????

I just temporarily replaced it with a section of rubber hose. I am going to install a metal filter before the fuel pump instead of before the carb because I do not like the look of them. The glass was nice and cool that I could see the flow but it started to leak and I am glad we saw it when we did.

Glass fuel filters above the intake manifold is just asking for a fire. anything is better weather it looks good or not. I have heard mixed reviews on the plastic ones too SO I decided to stick with metal.

Re: Fuel filter

My 97 had one of those glass ones just before the pressure regulator at the carb, Just didn't trust it so put a metal one down below the brake booster out of sight.

The only con I know of for the metal filters is you can't see inside to see how dirty it is.

Re: Fuel filter

Have glass one before & after the mechanical fuel pump- both are well below the intake manifold .

Re: Fuel filter

I, and nearly all my friends, use the standard WIX universal metal filter for rubber fuel line. I run it between the factory hard line and fuel pump then run a regular line up to my Holley 750. I have had excellent luck with the WIX and they are cheap to replace at any parts store and even some Wal-Marts.

I always use the filter on the suction side of the pump (between tank and pump). The fewer joints and connections between the pump and carb, the better. Less chance of a fire if the filter comes loose or leaks, and it's less likely to affect the fuel pressure at the carb.
