You may want to tell your customers about your website getting hacked.

This is a royal pain in the tail, having to cancel my credit cards and monitor my credit files, looking for more fraudulent charges and ID theft. Great freaking security you have there, how long has this been going on?

I received a call from Special Agent Gregory Lauff of the Secret Service today. I can send people his contact information, if you purchased from Mar-K and they got your credit card information.

The Mar-K website security was compromised by someone for a brief period of time. Credit card and personal information on a small number of customers was taken. As soon as we were aware of the problem, we shut down the online credit card ordering process and reported the incident to the credit card companies. We then notified the Secret Service. They are investigating this crime and have asked us to allow them to make all contact with customers who may have been affected. We are cooperating with the Secret Service so they can find out who is responsible. Also, we have worked with the credit card companies involved and have followed every protocol they require for dealing with these situations.

We at Mar-K greatly regret this problem happened to some of our customers as we too know what an inconvenience and loss of privacy it is. The security problem was only within the website ordering system and not with the handling of sensitive information within the company offices. We maintain strict procedures and practices in our handling of orders to assure that customers' information is safe. We hired a forensics company to help us with this issue and they verified that we have fixed the website security problem. At this time we are still not accepting credit card information to our website, in order that the investigation can continue.

Please call us if you have any concerns regarding our security. We have been in business for 30+ years and have gone to great lengths to secure our customers' information during this time. Our customers can feel safe that future transactions with us will be secure and that we will continue to monitor our site and our processes to keep their information safe from others.

When was your last network analysis? When were these applications scanned for flaws? Why was my data stored unencrypted? Why was it even stored at all?

What data did they receive? I need to know this to protect myself.
