I am getting ready to install my new repop gas tank from Truck Shop and I dont know if I should leave it alone or paint it? It looks to be galvanized or something. What were they from the factory?

All the one's I have pulled were not painted.

I don't think paint would stick to those things very well anyway, not without some sort of surface prep at least. Either way, I say leave it bare like they were from the factory.

Yep, didn't bother painting mine when I put the new one in either.

I'm going to paint mine. They may not have been painted from the factory but if they had been you might not be having to replace it. I'm sure the originals were better quality also. I have even thought about powder coating mine, it shouldn't be a problem since there has never been gas in it.

why not some rubber coating or that linex or rihno coat it . thats my thought cause i have to replace mine. carberetor guy showed me how much rust i had in the filter and carb. He rebuilt it and told me to fix soon or i will be seeing him again.

I wonder how well powder coat would stick (to the outside only of course)???

My original from the factory was painted black same as the frame.

I painted mine with high temp clear spray can. I find the hight temp paint is a little more forgiving than regular spray paint. I still looks good except the couple places I've scratched it.

IMO i would paint it....Todays metal is not yesterdays......As far as Paint sticking to it.....I would clean the tank with some soap and water....Then take a red scotch brite pad and go over the whole tank...320 grit paper could be used also.....Clean again with wax and grease remover.... A light coat of etch prime and then some base and clear.....You could also use a spray bomb ....Instead of base,clear job.....I did my father in laws Model A like this a few years ago.......Still looks great......Just my O.2......

I used a black poly one and ya cant see it behind the bumper or tow hitch but next time im going with a steel tank.
