1972 opinion needed

Hey guys I have a question, I am looking at this 72 with a 350/350 supposedly rebuilt within the last year.
The guy broke the bolt off in the head trying to install the upper alternator bracket, so when I go drive it I can only drive it around the block or so.
He states the floor pans and rockers have been replaced and new carpet installed, which he said he will be happy to pull up so I can inspect for any rust.

Now he is asking 1,500 for the truck and he is some financial trouble so I really believe I can get him down to 1,000. I have never replaced the bolt hes speakin of and originally I was lookin at maybe pickin this up to upgrade my 70, axles/brakes/motor/tranny, but I may juet fix this one and drive it.

So how big a deal is replacing this bolt and am I missing something cause this one seems like a bargain

Thanks
Steve

Maybe as easy as a easy out as far as the broken bolt removal ,,but I must ask ,,the guy is in financial trouble ,,why not just give him the $1500 .. the truck would still be a great buy. Look how clean he kept it for you .. just saying ..

I guess I feel sorry for the folks ,,thats all ,, Papa

Re: 1972 opinion needed

I would pay $1500 for it. We paid $1200 for my truck 5 years ago and it was definately not as nice as that one.

Re: 1972 opinion needed

Before the EZ out, you could try cramming a rag or paper towel in the hole and back the broken bolt out. It's worked for me before.

I do agree with the way you are thinking, I will word it a lil better for you. Hes a fairly young guy that cant afford to pay for the gas milage on this truck and pay the vet bills for his dog :-(.

I also think its a screaming deal but I wanted to bounce it off you guys

Streven ,, Now we know why he needs the money all the more .. I don't blame you for wanting it cheaper ,,heck No! I like great bargains too. As you see form the replies you are getting ,,You are one lucky guy to find a truck with a pretty fresh motor ,hardly any rust and looking good... I envy your talent to find such a deal .. papa gives you a high 5..

Re: 1972 opinion needed

That's a good deal so long as he didn't have an idiot build the motor like the one in mine (another story for another thread..).

Get a nut and mig weld it through the hole to the broken bolt. Put a wrench on the nut and turn. It's the easiest broken bolt R&R method I've ever tried.

Re: 1972 opinion needed

even with the engine NOT being rebuilt, it's still a steal.
Remember this though, if the guy has been fixing it up, then he has a clue as to what it is worth.
If he is able to doo floor boards and engine work, and recover seats... he has a clue what the labor is worth.
You p!ss him off by low baling him from his already bottom dollar, you may well not get the truck.
If it is a good deal, then give him what he's asking. That's my opinion, and granted, that's all it is... MY opinion.

Thats exactly what I thought when I saw the initial price, then he baited the hook and told me to come and take a look tomorrow and he would cut me a deal, so he could get his dog taken care of.

Re: 1972 opinion needed

I hate telling someone what to do in these cases but if the guy looked you in the eye after you tried to talk him down to 1k and said he had to have 2k I'd feel like that truck would still be worth it. If you can't remove the bolt your self you can get that removed easy enough. Thats a great find congrats, what ever you wind up giving for it IMO its worth it.

Re: 1972 opinion needed

Well crap wouldnt you know it my wifes car started acting up today, of course it is her work car and it does have 236,000 on it and it appears a new motor/rebuild may be in order.
I cant do both so if anyone that lives near Virginia Beach, Va is interested in this truck I can give you the contact info, I doubt hell have it for long.

Ahhhh, Man
That sucks.

That truck is truly a steal.
I mean, the worst case scenario would've been pulling the head & have an automotive machine shop extract the bolt; if nothing else worked.

Maybe the misses' car ain't as bad as you think & you can still snag the truck.

Good luck in whatever you decide/have to do.

I hope so but man her work car has a lot of miles and it aint soundin good, Im going out to check it over and maybe to a compression check if needed. I may still see if I can convince her I need the truck to relax me after working on that right hand drive Subaru

I would recommend pulling the head off to access the broken bolt. You may be able to turn it out with your fingers. This will also give you the opportunity to inspect the head and block surfaces, as well as look at the pistons and cylinder walls.

What a great deal, why are they always so far away? At that price it should already be gone. Wouldn't your wife like a nice truck for her work vehicle?

If you're gonna pull the head off, just pull them both off, switch them from side to side and forget about the broken bolt.

that is overkill of all overkill ideas I've heard.
Sorry, but in my opinion, it is pretty much a waste of time. There is no point in spending the afternoon rippin git apart, then spending close to $50 in gaskets to remove the broken bolt.
The fact of the matter is, that bolt can be removed almost as ieasily where the head is now.

Buy the truck! Then tell your wife that there's nothing hotter than a stellar babe in a classic truck.....unless of course that stellar babe is sitting beside you in that classic truck!
