you'll probably be better off with a 600 or 650. However, I have a haed time thinking you'll have a tune issue.

Gotta agree with Andy. All I know is my old '65 Corvette had a pretty hot (for its day) 327/365 that the General equipped with a 600 cfm single-inlet Holley with vacuum secondaries (if my ancient brain cells are working). And my '69 El Camino's 396/375, also a rather stout engine, came with an 800 cfm Holley.

Talking Re: 1407 edelbrock. too big?

should have added (maybe it does not matter) i will be running a 700r4 with, nearest i could figure (spin wheel count turns or drive shaft method) it has a 3.08 gear. will i be able to easily set the 750 up to not run rich and or stumble
by looking on links here it will turn about 1900 rpm @ 65 mph.

Re: 1407 edelbrock. too big?

with that combo, you'll get bad MPG more likely than not. You'll be cruising at too low an RPM and be bogging the engine (regardless of cab choice) and the returns will be depressing. With an overdrive, you'll want a 3.42 to 3.73 rear for betterr performance and MPG.
If you are dead set on that combo, then you'll need a smaller carb. the throttle responce in the low RPMs will suck with the bigger carb when under a load, like when dtruggling to maintain 65 MPH.
Now, granted, there's a few on here who have made the 3.07/700R4 combo work, but the majority report crappy MPG, worse than a 3 speed with the 3.07 alone.

Re: 1407 edelbrock. too big?

I think you will be disappointed with that much carb on a stock 350.In order to get good streetability, you need to keep the air velocity thru the carb up.The 750 will allow so much air that the velocity will be down. This will cause sluggish performance at all but WOT.
The lower the RPM's the more pronounced this will be.The suggestion of lower rear gears will help by moving the RPM's up a bit but you will probably still have somewhat less throttle response than you like.

Re: 1407 edelbrock. too big?

so i should look for a smaller carb ... and rebuild the old th350 or swap rear end or gears? this project just seems to get more involved but that is the fun of it

Re: 1407 edelbrock. too big?

personally, I'd just go for the TH350/3.07 gears. But I'm a cheap SOB.
A 3.73/700R4 will net you a slightly lower cruise RPM, and a deeper first gear verses the aformentioned set up. And, this would probably net you better MPG too. But if you are looking for $$ saved in MPG, it may take a LONG time to pay its self off. When you consider the tranny and possible (recomended) rebuild and upgrades, the stuff to make it work in an old vehicle, and then the rear gear swap... it all adds up to some big numbers.

Re: 1407 edelbrock. too big?

my neighbor proclaims to be good with quadrajets and has one he will sell me rebuilt for $50 plus cost of kit. i have a th350 came in truck but needs rebuild. transmission guy will do it for $500 or a 700 for 700. is it possible to use the 700 but have the torque converter lock in 3rd gear and not use od till i do a rear gear swap?? that would give me lower 1st and second gear and yet 1:1
