I've decided to upgrade the cam and was expecting it to be pretty straight forward ( what a dreamer I am). None of the lifters want to come out of their bores. I can only assume that they have mushroomed and that is holding them back. What is the best way to deal with this? I really don't want to take the crank out. This is suppose to be a quick refurb. The motor is out of the truck and I have the pan off. HELP

If they will come up enough to remove the cam,pull it and remove them from the bottom.

Many times they are stuck from carbon buildup.

When trying to remove them spray them with carb cleaner. It will leak down the sides of the lifter and should aid in removal.

You are right in the mushroom'ing effect as well. But that shouldnt be the bigger of the 2 issues.

Gum-Out carb cleaner has always been my friend when it comes to old lifter removal, that and a lifter removal tool that way you get a good grip on them.
That tool is something you can pick up just about anywhere, it's nothing exotic so you may even find it at a local auto part house.

Well if they won't come out then they can go in. I pulled them up and they stayed in place while I removed the cam. I then took a screwdriver and tapped them back down and through. I counted 16 lifters that eventually came out so I should be good to go. Thanks for the help, I know I can always count on this group to come through.

Check the lifter bores to make sure you can get the new ones in before you install the cam . Just a heads up in case you didn't think about it. Bob

Autozone has a tool that you install on the top of the lifter and you screw the handle a little bit and it grabs the lock area of the lifter then pull up on the handle(think slide hammer,but tiny) and wah-lah,out comes the lifter

Has this same problem, they were just gunked up, had to remove from below. I didn't now about the tool, I will remember that~
