Re: 68 gmc jet turbine truck
It's a c/1500. Not a C/10. GMC was ahead of the times back in the day.
![]() Jerry, is this the same one that a member saw recently at a cruise in or something? I know I've seen it on here before. That is bad ass though. I have to ask... you had it down the 1/4 mile yet? BTW... perfect song for the vidio!!! |

Re: 68 gmc jet turbine truck
Here's one for sale...
http://www.turbinesbygateway.com/forsale.html Depending on which model he used he has 300-367 shaft horsepower... Not bad for a 250lb engine. still very cool...that engine is older than the truck.. Boeing hasn't made turbines since the early 60's...

Re: 68 gmc jet turbine truck
I bet its fast but not quick...turbines have a spool-up period but run forever ocne going...
That's only a 300ish HP engine anyway...

Re: 68 gmc jet turbine truck
I worked on M-1 tanks for quite a while, they are powered by the AGT1500 turbine. (air gas turbine 1500 horse)
Now, while they do take a second to spool up, they will pull HARD. The 1500 horse engine will make a 70 ton (yes, 140,000 pounds) leap forward. Last edited by Longhorn Man; 10-27-2008 at 05:22 PM. |

Re: 68 gmc jet turbine truck
Lots of you asking how fast the truck is. Not sure yet. I am still working out small bugs. I have a line lock in and plan to post a burnout, but i don't want to break it yet. Once you get past the few seconds of throttle lag it moves faster the a good running small block and i have not one past 80% power.
It cruises down the freeway just above a idle in third gear. What it will do in fourth i don't know. How fast do you want to go in a 68 truck. No one i talked to said i would be able make it drivable. I did and an still enjoying the looks it gets as i drive down the road. More to come. |

Re: 68 gmc jet turbine truck
Jerry, that's certainly different alright. While I'm not a jet power kind of guy I am interested in how it's all put together. Auto tranny and torque converter? Stall? Those will burn most anything flammable right? Paint thinner, perfume, etc.?
I remember Chrysler built about 55 turbine cars in the mid 1960's and put them out on the street for average joe's to drive in the real world for a couple of months and report their experiences when they turned them back in. The mexican president ran one on tequila. The car looked something like a Tbird. It apparently didn't go over to well as it never made it into production. There are only a few around in private collections and only 4 or 5 actual running cars. The rest were destroyed. For those interested in Chrysler's turbine cars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Turbine_Car

Re: 68 gmc jet turbine truck
Jerry, was that a clutch pedal you pressed when you put it in gear?

Re: 68 gmc jet turbine truck
It was a clutch pedal. However when i built the drop gear box that goes between the turbine and the 700R4 trans i added a Harley disk brake rotor and caliper to stop the power turbine while i put it into gear. Then it spools up again and the torque converter 800 RPM stall speed takes up the slack until i throttle up. It want to creep a bit but does fine a red lights.

Re: 68 gmc jet turbine truck
very interesting.
So what do you do for a living? Or is this kind of stuff just interest you? Have you had much trouble with the cops? I know there's this cat in LA with a new betle, he has the stock stuff up front, and a turbine with afterburner stickin out the back. The cops are constantly bustin his balls even though he doesn't light it up in traffic. The last i head about it, the Califrnia DMV was gonna deny his registration due to national security reasons! |
