Question '66 with factory air....???

Hey guys,
i have a friend that has a line on a 66 truck that he was told is all original, the guy told him that the truck is a factory pwr. Steer. & factory a.c. Truck. I guess my question is did these year of trucks come with a.c.??? I can believe the pwr. Steer. But i am not sure about the a.c. Part.....

Thanks!!

Re: '66 with factory air....???

Yes they did. They are very rare, but factory A/C was an option.

I don't mean this to sound dumb... But is there a way to visually "varify" if the a.c. Is factory..... Thanks for the input.

Re: '66 with factory air....???

not the best shot... but the dash will look like this:
check for the 3 control knobs to the right, and the center vent where the ashtray was. there should also be an external ashtray mounted under the dash, if it is still there.
If it does have air, but dosen't look like this then it is probably a dealer installed aftermarket unit.

Re: '66 with factory air....???

Rod, I think the term "factory air" is used to loosely for these model trucks. I'm really not sure there is such a think as "factory air" at all. I think it was a "add on" at the factory at the dealer's request.

There were two type of controls, the pull knobs like in the photo above and "slide" type controls located on the driver side of the vents at the ash tray space. the space where the heater controls are located.

Just my thoughts.

Re: '66 with factory air....???

Slide controls were the deluxe heater.
Dealer install was a under dash, which is rarer IIRC.
I have one, but its boxed up at the moment.

Jonz, if your "T" was a roadster. We would be talking.
I like'em Topless.

I have a 1964 Suburban that has the OEM cross ram PS.
I don't know what year PS started and I personally have not seen Air in a kneeknocker.

Re: '66 with factory air....???

chief,It could be, I saved it from a board members post a while back, but I don't remember who it was.

If you look at that engine shot I posted, you can see the p.s., and I remember someone saying that that was a 100% accurate restoration.

The power steering was know as "Power-Assist Steering". The power steering system consisted of a power steering pump mounted on the driver side of the harmonic balancer, along with a manual gear box on the outside of the driver side frame rail, coupled with a cylinder attached to the steering linkage with a high pressure hose and a return hose attached to the power steering pump. Power steering, a.k.a. "Power-Assist Steering" was available on the '64-'66 Chevy trucks, for sure.

I'm with Tony on that one. You occasionally see the power assist units on ebay!

Just for the record, I had a '63 once that had the power assist steering. So they were available in '63 also.
