At the cabin this past weekend, and the truck was not started since I arrived on Friday night until Sunday about 3:30. It was started and backed up to load a lawn tractor to bring home. Any way I go to start it at 6:00 Pm and the fuel pump does not come and therefore does not start. After some thinking and a phone call I hit the tank with a hammer a couple of times and it starts! I drive it home and park it in the driveway accepting the fact that I need to replace the pump. Before I go to bed after letting it sit for a whle I try tot start it expecting it to not run and the pump comes on and the truck starts. It started again this morning WTF! I did not drive it to work because I do not want to have it stranded away from the home garage.
Is there anything else that it could be other than the pump or wire coneection at the tank? The only other thing related is my fuel guage started to have a high frequency vibration in the needle about a year ago. I assumed the sending unit was starting to wear out. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have replaced my fuel pump on my 97 3 times. Each time i was able to make the pump come on by hitting the tank with a hammer. Only two of those times was it able to crank and drive. It will eventually not crank even by hitting the tank. When i say eventually i mean, you probably won't get many more cranks out of it. Replace the pump and be done with it. Its not fun hitting the tank in a parking lot hoping you have one more crank left in it.

Ok I was thinking 99% fuel pump, I just did not want to overlook any wire issues that may be present.

GET A GM Delco fuel pump! and make sure you replace the "sock filter" along with it, it is a seperate part. I've replaced aftermarket pumps too many times..

Too late. Already recieved the aftermarket. A friend works for a supply house and got me what I thught was a good deal at $180 shipped. He claims they do not have any trouble with them. It does have a warranty, but that leaves me swapping again. I will keep you guys posted if anything happens.
I was thinking of raising the bed to get at the tank. Anybody do that? I post another topic on it and see who hits it. It seems to be just 4 bolts and the rear wire harness?

I've read that as well, some people just pull the bed to get at it.. my surburban is different, got to drop the tank...
